Re: Head Gasket failure, what to look for

Symptoms vary but could consist of any of the following:

> Lack of power
> white smoke from exhaust
> high temp reading
> no water left in expansion bottle
> mayo like goo on oil filler cap (creamy/white colour)
> badly coloured water/junk in expansion bottle
> mayo on oil dipstick

Re: Head Gasket failure, what to look for

Only symptom is no water in the expansion bottle, though it does seem to have a lot of mould/residue stuff in there?

Also of note, i filled her up to the brim with water, started her up, ran her at a fast idle for about 30seconds and water was gushing from the bottom, like a hose was on in the engine bay. Deffinately from the back of the engine and towards the l/h side if looking directly at it.

Looks like im gonna have to learn to do a headgasket soon

Re: Head Gasket failure, what to look for

Coolant hose of death it sounds like.

There is a hose that goes from the back of the engine to the bulk head area iirc that is a common issue. It will perish/split and dump your coolant basically.

Common fault on the Coupe 20V and 20VT so its likely to be the same on the 20V Bravo.

If you catch it early enough, you can get away with replacing the hose, otherwise the 'coolant hose of death' is appropriately named.

Re: Head Gasket failure, what to look for

HGF on a 20V is not a common so I'd basically look into other options first.

Re: Bleeding coolant system on a 155HGT?

It's great mike, the fact i drive it flat out everywhere mightn't help.

Anyone any help suggestions on bleeding the coolant?

Okay so ive spent a few hours stripping down bits to get to said coolant hose of death. Had to loosen the VIS unit, remove intake manifold, throttle body, ecu, injectors, coil packs, rocker cover etc etc. Major ballache. Got down to the offending item which is held on with some weird ratchet jubilee clips? Removed the offending pipe, which had a split 1/4-1/2 inch long in it right under the VIS unit. Gonna have to ring around tomorrow morning as most places are closed today. Hose is 30mm ID with 5mm thick walls. Of note is the fact it is touching the actual block in certain place, which looks like it has caused it to weaken. Have orderd some silicone self-amalgamating tape to re-inforce in these areas's too.

Pics below, sorry for the essay, but thought it might help in the future.

Only problem is the bend at the end, its a 90degree and its pretty tight, doesn't silicone hose fold rather than bend?

glad you sussed it out mate, explains where all the water was goin :) Wouldnt of thought you had to remove the ecu tho to get to it?

but saying that,i didnt inspect mine when i dropped the engine in so who knows how long itll last lol

Will mate, might be worthwile getting a metal one nocked up or try to upgrade it further(heat wrap), mine had exact same problem was a real nightmare to diagnose problem and as you know is a pig to do.
Have you disconnected the VIS system or just reomved manifold rubbers??
