Computer security?

Computer security?

I have my mobile number registered with PayPal so they can text security numbers when needed. I use it for eBay so no worries about inactivity. ;)

I'm thinking about getting a VPN but need to find one that's not got any association with China. Google "VPN avoiding china" and see what comes up!!!

Edit - this looks pretty good https://www.cyberghostvpn.com/en_US...{{tid}}&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=10362
Thanks Dave. I'm intrigued by the idea of these VPN "thingys" but don't really understand what they are. Somewhere in the depths of the "fug" that is my mind I also seem to associate them with people who do "dodgy" stuff like viewing porn etc? I quite like the idea of maybe being able to "hide" from the "baddies" who may be trying to steal my credit card or personal details, if indeed that is what it would allow me to do?

Imagine driving from one place to another on the roads where people can see you and get to your car

Then imagine doing the same journeys but in a underground sealed tunnel on your own
Nobody but the people at each end knows exactly what's going on as your protected by the tunnel
Or encryption in computer term's as all the data traveling through the VPN is encrypted

Thanks chris that's made it much clearer for me. I quite like the idea. How do i go about actually doing it - bearing in mind I've never had any proper computer training and just picked things up as I've gone along.

There are various organisations offering VPNs, all at a cost of course. Many of the anti-virus companies offer such a service, as an add-on to their paid software. If you're using any free software, looking for their VPN service will introduce you to their paid programs.
Over several computers, I use two anti-virus programs. Bitdefender & Kapsersky. Bitdefender is based in Eastern Europe, Romania I think, and I've used them for a long time. Always very pleased with their service. Kaspersky was once given away free for Barclays online customers, which introduced them to me. They are Russian, and a while ago there was a panic about spying, and they were removed from all government sites, and Barclays stopped offering them free. I continued with them. Never had a problem. If the Russians wish to spy on my browsing, good luck to them, the poor souls will be rather bored.
