Computer help please!

A wee while ago i bought a wireless router as i got a laptop for doing diagnostics. It works gread with the laptop, but my pc is hard wired in, but dosn't see the router .

tried reinstalling xp, and its still the same, only indication that the connection is there, is that the wee light is on on the router.

Any ideas? i thought this stuff was supposed to be plug and play:s

If you hadn't said you'd re-installed windows I'd have thought it was just a simple case of the NIC not being set up to automatically get an IP address from the DHCP. Other than that, I'd say the NIC is b0rked. Does it show up in the hardware manager?

whats NIC? nothing showing up anywhere, pc not seeing it at all

NIC = Network Interface Card, sorry about that - my inner geek coming out again

If you go to Control Panel >> System >> Hardware >> Device Manager there should be something showing up under Network Devices or something similar, if not it'll just need the drivers installing (you'll probably see something lower down with a yellow exclamation mark saying Unknown Device or similar), which is easy if you know what network device you have but not so easy when you've not got a clue ... as I experienced the other day trying to set it all back up again on my mum's machine

tried another wireless modem, no joy

switched off the wireless card on the lappy and plugged it in....result, so must be the pc thats fubared:bomb:

Is there anywhere that i can get an ethernet connector for a pci slot?

Not much use if it's not using wireless tho, and you only get an Fn key on laptops

I already suggested that, but if he doesn't know what NIC he has then he's screwed tbh.

Stuarty, is the network port built into the motherboard? If so, do you know what motherboard is in the machine?

its an asus motherboard, built in ethernet plug thingy. on the motherboard drivers disc theres nothing about network drivers

This may be getting a bit technical, but if it's got an nVidia chipset the Forceware drivers should also take care of the networking

right frazer, got a new problem for you bud:s

computer is now connecting to the net, BUT not liking a lot of sites (avg.com, photobucket etc...)

and every site takes an age to load, was never like that when it was just the speedtouch usb modem that was installed,

any ideas?

Gonna have to be a bit more specific - not liking how? Does it connect but slowly, connect but not load fully, not connect at all? If it doesn't connect at all, what screen to you get - page cannot be displayed or ... ?

What router have you got? What browser are you using?

We'll see where to go from there

LOL all of the above, its a belkin 54g
