Plugged mine in (thanks to Deckchair for help with that one (y)), green light comes on on the interface, but all the software says "Interface not responding".

Thought I had it sussed as well . . .

yes that looks like that'll do you (provided you have a laptop serial port) . The "strange box" is the interface which you must have so your laptop doesn't connect directly to the car's computer otherwise horrible things would happen but is able to read and write data from the ecu to your laptop

Try to think of it as man and woman and a condom. The interface is your condom. It allows communication without direct contact:)

ok think i should rephrase that. the one you posted is the one i got but ive got no serial port on my laptop! so i need the other on but that doesnt have an interface? so i need the usb one and an interface right? i checked with pc world and apparantly you cant get a serial to usb atapter?

lmao at the condom metaphor(sp?)

"so i need the usb one and an interface right?"
Yes, you must have an interface and if usb is all you have on your laptop then that's what you gotta have

"i checked with pc world and apparantly you cant get a serial to usb atapter?"
no they're different kind of ports. The whole interface and connectors are either set up for usb or serial port

Hi,
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to get hold of the diagnostic sopftware and cable that fiat dealerships use? I previously owned a VW Golf and you could get hold of the cables and software to diagnose faults yourself. I know the socket for the cable is at the top of the interior fuse box.
Thanks
James

I have just bought a diagnostic unit off E-bay, its called an OBD2 check engine scanner at about £23. It turned off my engine light and gave me the code that was causing the problem. I did have to try it several times before it worked on my 1.6 Stilo. however it turned the engine light off my nieces Corsa in less than 5 seconds. Its a stand alone unit, you wont need a computer.

Got a link to the you purchased? *goes off to look anyway*

I can't have one with a serial port on - for starters, my laptop here doesn't have one :( . I then thought of using my old laptop at work, which does have one, then I remembered it doesn't have a battery in it, lol

So something like this won't work?

I hate PC World with a passion :)

Well the bloke I bought mine off isn't replying; may report it to ebay.

Its a damned shame, the green lights on the interface lit up, but none of the software on the laptop recognised it. Stupid question but I plugged the serial cable in after turning the PC on but before opening up the software; surely that doesn't matter??

is it not fiat too? on the one i baught it had a list of compatible cars and the stilo was one of them!

Where did you buy yours? Have you still got it? Wouldn't mind having a look at one to see if it's worth buying.:p

LOL! Who said I had a laptop?!:p IIRC you can get serial to usb convertors but I also remember a big question mark hanging over them about reliability... Which is something we should all be used to, we drive Fiats after all!

I'm not sure when we're over your way again but Kirsty PM'd me about some music so that'd be an excuse to come over.;)

or pool next month ;) kill three birds with one stone lol.

It might be an idea to have a look at some local computer fairs to make sure you get the correct one (ie. number of pins, usb 1.1 or 2.0) etc. I don't know how far you'd be prepared to travel but there is one in Manchester near the Trafford Centre every saturday.
