Clutch tapping/grinding when pressed in

When the engine is on, everything is fine, until I depress the clutch. When I push the clutch in, and select any gear, a noticable random but consistent tapping noise occurs with a slight grinding sound as well. If I'm in neutral and push the clutch in, there is no noise, only when I select a (any) gear. After I lift the clutch up to pull away it stops.

There are no other symptoms, the clutch pedal itself feels fine.

Any ideas? Is it going to be expensive?

It could be the gearbox input bearing. It might be the clutch but as its not noisy in neutral I think that's less likely. Either way the gearbox will need to be properly diagnosed and if its removed for repair do the clutch while its apart. Avoid driving until its fixed or you may totally wreck the gearbox.

Check under the clutch bell housing for signs of oil leaks. Thick stuff that smells like cat pee is gearbox oil.

Yeah, might be worth checking the gearbox oil if you're grinding her in.

Weirdly, it has started doing it in neutral now (when clutch in).. Does that make it more likely to be the clutch instead?

No - it means what ever is Breaking up - is getting worse

I'd like to say its the input bearing aswell - if the bearing fails - the Seal leaks - oil leaks onto the cluthc - and the clutch is ruined shortly follwed by the box as it runs dry

you want it looking at if you can hear it more, mate.. from experience, the last thing you want is a dry, leaky box!

When mine was doing this, after a gear box change, i found out it was the s*it plate around gear box, i bent it back, and it did not do it any more
