cheap dash cam?

cheap dash cam?

Sounds good, i asked Admiral when i was renewing and they turned around and said "no one has ever asked us this but sounds like a good idea in the event of an accident"

Lying b'stards. When I moved to their multi car policy in 2011, they asked about mods - I told them a dashcam had been fitted - 'oh, that's not on my list, I guess it's OK' - thanks, now is there a discount for having one? (telling them to look at my record & the incident 4 years previous) - had to refer me up the food chain. I recounted to the senior how MY dashcam footage PROVED beyond doubt that the other guy was at fault & so how the footage saved my insurance about £1.5k - and me much more in the long run.
But no, they don't have provision to offer discounts for dashcams.

One day, some insurer will be sweating over a large payout & my video footage can get them out of it - THEN I'll see how much the footage is worth :D

About 4 months ago I witnessed 2 transit sized vans hit each other on a country road, said I'd got it on camera and would happily be a witness, one insurance company called and left a voice mail, decided not to call back after being given a premium rate number to call back. Would have been interesting to see if they'd have entertained buying the footage off of me or not though.

im after a cheap but decent camera for my car after two near misses this week due to other peoples bad driving on the m62.

also wouldnt mind something that can record while the cars switched off to catch the scrote who has run into the bravo whilst it was parked and fecked off leaving me with the damage.

but just a camera for driving for now would be good. any reccomendations?

I'd say the one I posted a few post back tbh. For the money can't go wrong really IMO. I'm looking at getting a 2nd for the other cars.

Have to agree.
At less than £50 for front AND rear cams (and the rear cam on mine takes a far better night shot than my dedicated reversing cam) you can't go wrong.
Only downside with mine was the instructions written in chinese & the sound reproduction is sh*te - but I only use the sound to shout out the reg number just in case the cam didn't quite catch it.

BTW, it is possible that the cam has a motion sensor - not sure, but some do.

Further to my post @122, I also informed the insurance that all our cars are parked on the driveway & the area is covered by CCTV with good range infra-red & audio capability.

Didn't impress them enough to knock a few quid off.
Car insurance really is a huge scam.

They do, makes a funny ding dong noise, managed to somehow set mine for this morning on the way to work, only the 2nd or 3rd time mind since I've had it.

Because even with night vision / infra red, external night CCTV recording is normally very poor, and ultimatly, doesn't physically stop / prevent theft etc - anyone can wear a hoodie.

CCTV is a very passive system ultimatly, where as insurance look more at active (or what ever the two types are) which will physically stop a theft (immobilisers etc). No scam, just fact unfortunatly.

Mine's reasonable quality, even so, the pikeys don't know how good the system is & surely it's better than no system at all.

BTW, do you know if there is an online manual for the dual lens cam anywhere? despite being fluent in many languages, (English, rubbish, Bullsh*t, cobblers & twaddle to name but a few) I've yet to crack the code that is chinese.

What will be interesting is ive left my cam in the Bravo while it got recovered and is in at the garage. Will be reviewing the footage when i get it back.. Just hope they havnt unplugged it :p

That's one of the pivotal points in dashcam history. The bloke had a look at his dashcam & was amazed at the garage mechs doing stupid mph down local roads.

Need to upload footage of clutch going! :p

Good point, id love to listen to my reaction. dunno what I said probs "oh f*ck, thats the clutch gone"

Aye, should have seen how the chap drove my car onto the back of the trailer, obv rammed it in first but then drove it excessively fast in a circle to line it up with the trailer.. I was inside out the way at this point but was looking out the window.
