I've been through eLEARN before i undertake a plethora of work on the ol girl... torque settings are a little vague... i have 3 figures listed in different parts of eLEARN for the 2 lower shock bolts.

  • 6.7daNm
  • 7.?daNm (memory failed me :( )
  • 12.5daNm!!!

The 6.7 and 7.? seem about right the 12.5 doesnt though... can anyone confirm?

ALSO

The 4 bolts that hold each side of the rear axle bracket to the body iirc come back as 5.0daNm... seems a little low for such a critical part (the bolts through the bushes are 12.5daNm)

FINALLY

track rod ball joint nut... got settings from 7.0-9.5daNm

As usual any help greatly appreciated

I've noticed this several times that eLEARN shows different torque settings for the same nut or bolt in different sections of the manual.

I've looked through the 2003 and 2006 versions of eLEARN and they both show the same variations that you've posted above. (7.5 daNm for lower shock absorber bolts).

Personally, unless it's a torque critical component such as crankshaft journal bearings or a gearbox crush sleeve, or preloading a bearing race, I don't adhere to the official torque settings, just tighten until it "feels" right. I would think you being in the trade Rich would do the same.

I think torque for non critical components is a matter of "tight enough so it doesn't work loose but not so tight that the bolt breaks".

An engineer once told me "tighten it until the bolt breaks......... then back it off a quarter of a turn". ;)

yeah 7.5 seems right but if it was 12.5 i would have been WAAAAAYYYY short.

ill use my better judgement, just didnt know if it was me reading it wrong

Cheers Dave!
