For some reason i cant attach any external devices through my usb ports. It wont recognise when my phone is connect, my mouse, ipod ect ect. Any ideas whats going on? it has only suddenly happened. I have reset the computer to a previously stored time when i know it did work, still them same though

I think you will find that if you delete the usb controller in device manager and reboot then windows will reload it (this has worked with XP in the past, I am not sure on vista though)

Trev

try rebooting into safe mode (before you get to the scrolling green bar when vista starts, hold down F8 and select safe mode from the menu). Then try disabling/uninstalling the usb controller as above, then reboot. If that doesn't work try a rollback on the driver for the controller.
Do _all_ your USB ports not work? Could be disabled in the BIOS, or you might need to redownload your motherboard drivers.

BIOS - Basic Input/Output System. [ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BIOS[/ame]

Press F2/Delete/F12 during boot to enter the BIOS. Somewhere it will have the option to disable various controllers including USB.

If you haven't reset the BIOS I doubt it's been disabled. More likely the driver needs updating. You should be able to uninstall the USB device in device manager then re-scan the computer for changes - OR - right click them and choose update driver from microsoft - OR - install the latest motherboard chipset drivers

Are we talking front USB ports, or ones on the back?

Has it previously worked in those ports?

do any of your usb devices have an LED on or anything so you can check that they are being powered when connected?

To delete the USB controllers you need to expand the section that says USB controllers and delete the bits below. If not try deleting the root hub parts. Apologies - see you tried it.

Ok, so the mouse light comes on, but it doesn't recognise the actual device?

What motherboard have you got? I need model, not just make :)

Got my mums friend out to this problem as i dont do computer repairs. He builds computers and makes software for big companies and he was stumped. Motherboard was fine, everything enabled even tried to install a usb card but still wouldnt recognise a usb device.
I'm getting it back tomorrow so am going to save everything on it and reset it to factory and see what happens, after that im lost
