Just had a camshaft seal replaced due to an oil leak. Garage suggested replacing cam belt whilst accessible which they did. I now have a squeal coming from the engine, spoke to garage who said the belt was self tensioning and would settle after a few days. Does this sound right ?

I fitted a Getes kit to our 1.2 8v about 40k ago and it squealed when cold when pushing on up through second and third. First I blamed the tensioner as it had seemed a bit stiff. I had to go back in twice to get it to stop and I forget whether I ended up loosening or tightening it.

no mate they lie
a cambelt kit for a punto is $20 but you can get a belt for a $10
they have probably put a new belt on the old tensioner and because the old belt will have made a line in this tensioner theyve overdone the tightness of the new belt to compensate for this
its bad because it will ruin the water pump bearing but because its a new belt it can also cause premature belt wear or delimination of the fibres also the idler wheel has already had its life
i would rather use the old belt in this situation

to summarise your garage are not fit for purpose
