18 months ago we had a new clutch fitted to our Fiat Ulysee. 6 months later on Christmas day the clutch plate broke. This was replaced under warranty. 6 months later it was playing up again. Taken back to the garage & repaired again under warranty. Supplier of clutch suggested replacing fly wheel at the same time as that might be causing the problem. Here we are 6 months down the line & the clutch plate has broken again. Anyone have similar problems or know what could be causing them to break.

Bad luck. I think its safe to rule out defective covers with every one of your replacement clutch covers. to be unlucky once is enough, twice is remote, 3 times and should go and buy a lotto ticket.

The problem with jobs like these is that the work is largely hidden once the gearbox is refitted so youre in the lap of the gods.

I wonder if the cover plate was torqued down in the proper sequence or did they just air gun one bolt in then the next one to it rather than slowly doing each one up diagonally opposed? Ive heard of the poor fitting like this damaging the springs on the clutch friction plate.......unless the flywheel is excessively worn I cant see that causing a problem with the cover plate.

When they have changed all these clutch covers have they inspected them to see if there is any obvious damage and what might cause it? Swapping it for a new is all well and good but youll never get to the root of the problem.

I wonder if the release bearing fork bushes are worn? It can be many things really - can you give us a few more symptoms and how it drove, how it failed, noises etc.

be thankful its under warranty cos after 4 clutches youd be needing a small mortgage to pay for the parts labour and VAT!

when you say the plate broke.. HOW did it fail,
was it a split in the metal ?,
or a separation of the friction material..??,

some of these can have common causes,
does this range of vehicles have a common failure here.. - also what engine is in your vehicle?,

Id say its time to learn how to change gear , or get a auto
I've been driving for 42 years including a 25foot motorhome & have never had a problem with clutch's before.
The garage has replaced the clutch plate again & spoken to the supplier to check there isn't a problem, ie play in the drive & that it had been tightened correctly & everything was as it should be. The splines on the clutch had sheared/disintegrated.
The 1st clutch was replaced due to it beginning to slip very slightly.
The second clutch broke as this time on Christmas Day & had to be towed as you lose all drive immediately.
The 3rd clutch was replaced 6 months later when we felt there was something wrong & the plate showed signs of failing.
The 4th clutch broke the same as the 2nd & all drive was lost with no warning signs.
So as the garage has said it is nothing to do with the way the car is driven but thanks for answering

The clutch has been replaced under warranty for the 3rd time. The garage saidd all the splines were sheared off or disintegrated. The same problem as the 2 nd clutch.
It is going back in January to be checked again.
He has spoken to the supplier & they said to check all your suggestions, he said there was no play in drive & everything was tightened up correctly & aligned correctly.
Thanks for your reply

what engine is in your Ulysee ? DMF equipped..?

charlie

it would appear so
i wonder if the garage has welded up the flywheel
or using chocolate clutches
or indeed the op doesnt know how to drive a dual mass inflicted vehicle

these vehicles are getting stolen on mass by the way to go to africa so be warned op
