Technical Breather hose question

Hi,

i have a punto sporting 16v mk2 and i noticed a few weeks ago my oil breather hose was snapped so i went ahead and ordered a new one.

It was like a 3 way hose. when i was disconnecting the smaller end from the hose the outlet it was pushed onto snapped!

i have no idea what it is or whats its for. I dont know much about cars :S

here is a picture incase i have confused you guys. the red circle is the snapped hose connector, you can see the snapped bit on the end of the breather hose.

i have now found out what this thing is for and performed a bit of DIY to get the thing connected again!
