Hi There
My handbrake will not hold the car on an incline even though its pulled up to the last. I took off the drums and the shoes look ok with enough friction material on all shoes. The cylinders are not leaking and are working okay. The handbrake lever mechanism on the backplate is loose and not seized.
How can I know if the adjusters associated with the brake shoes are working?
I looked underneath the car at the handbrake lever where it enters the "transmission" tunnel and I can see there is a threaded rod where some adjustment can be done. How can the handbrake be adjusted?

ideally with any FIAT handbrake , you want to ensure the self-adjusters are free (TICK)

make sure that when the drum passes over the shoes(on reassembly), that it just passes over the unworn "lip" on the edge of the drum, ( IF the lip is really pronounced, it's possible your drums are worn beyond their service limit- get it checked)

that way the movement required to get the shoes FULLY engaged is minimised ( you also have far less foot pedal travel)

this works much better with the leverage of the handbrake too,

once you're happy you've optimised the 2 x drum to shoe "fit's",
then adjust the cable to get 2 to 3 clicks,

Charlie
