So, the Seicento passed its MOT again, but this time with an advisory on offside rear brake effort low (the usual handbrake lever seize) and also corrosion on brake pipes. Fair enough.


I'm probably going to let eth car go this year but wanted to deal with the corroded pipes (the short one that goes to the cylinder). Gave them a vigorous wire brush and pressed the brake pedal hard. Yep.....fluid all over.


So........


1. Replacing the pipe - does it come already setup from FIAT or anywhere else? I could do without crafting my own.


2. Presumably it'll be a pig to do.

It isn't too hard to sort, you should get copper ones made up there easy to fit because there fairly flexible, the hand brake will be a easy fix also, it will just be the handbrake arm the goes into the rear drum, it's probably seized if you remove and soak in wd40 and give it a good wiggle it should free it up

Cheers - I did the handbrake thinking that's be the hard job.......aaah well.


I'll get back under tomorrow to remove the bad pipe.


That brake pipe spanner 10mm?

Thanks. How about those pipe flaring tools? Any advice? Or go to a local garage and get them to do it?
 
Yes, as he says. I like having the tools, but a decent flaring tool will cost you £30 + or so -- the ones FROST do are said to be good, then you have the Kunifer, the end fittings, etc.

If I was doing the whole car, I'd buy the tooling, but for a couple of pipes, I'd get them ready made.


Well, the hard part is done - removing the old pipe....not in one piece. What an absolute swine of a job. My new £8 Laser pipe tool rounded things nicely.


At the drum end I just removed the cylinder and wedged it into the Workmate - some Dremel cutting and tightly squeezed Molegrip got the old pipe out.


At the flexible end - similar story but worse to do (those of us with no 4-post life or inspection pit are hard done by).


Will nip to a local place tomorrow - I'm hoping they'll be reasonable for 18 inches of copper.
 
all the solid lines can be had from fiat, just bolt them on... Pretty sure they are not that dear.

I have one of the cheapy flaring tools and its ok, but i always make sure to cut the pipe a bit longer than needed incase the flare isn't great and need redoing. My mate has a proper flaring tool, miles better than any cheap tool but its pretty damned expensive bit of kit, not something a diy'er would ever buy really.
