Quick question.

Car now has a manual boost control and it is driving a hell of a lot better, but it seems like third gear doesn't have that kick with the boost kicks in. 1st, 2nd - Massive kick, 3rd - feels like nothing, 4th, 5th - small kick 6th - just nice acceleration.
How does 3rd gear feel for you guys? Car is running standard....no mods.

I've got the new dump valve to go on next week. It arrived this morning and I'm sure that will make a difference too.

I'm still not happy with the idling. Need to bite the bullet and get a new idle control valve. Not a used one.

How have you set up the manual boost controller ?
When I set one up,I think I set it up in third gear to boost to 1.2 bar max.
What is it boosting to in third ?

I don't know what it's boosting up to in third, but in 2nd it's 1bar. That's how we set it up. Should we have set it to 1 bar in third as the bench mark?

Just to clarify. It's a manual boost control so 1 bar limit should be 1 bar for every gear.

There's a joke on Fccuk that Third gear is the "magic third gear" Apparently Lambo's, Ferrari's, they all have to play second fiddle once that magic third gear is selected! :D
Personally Though I find second the most brutal. 30-70 in second (if there's traction) is addictive. Third and fourth are just smooth for me, not so brutal. But then Mine's been mapped, and it's so deceptively smooth only the clocks reveal just how fast you're accelerating.

Not being funny mate but you really need a boost gauge when you start messing around with the boost settings.
The main reason for this is to make sure you are not overboosting and thus destroying the turbo/clutch.
The T28 is quite happy at 1.2 Bar which should be seen as the MAXIMUM you
can boost to.
I would have set the boost controller up in third as I did with my last coupe.
I found that when set up in third at a max of 1.2 bar....the rest of the gears and boost were fine.

I'm planning on installing one. I thought 1.2bar is too much for a standard set up? I don't want to cause any damage to the car.
I'm back at Rogers on Thursday so will get it sorted then.

Actually, while I'm asking, I need a basic boost gauge (pref in bar not PSI) and mount. (pillar). Any links to somewhere I can buy one?

Check out fleabay....not expensive.
People normally fit one in place of the clock.
The standard 20vt normally boosts to 1 bar max but when I fitted my PRV,I had a GTECH 1 chip fitted which I then set the boost to 1.2 bar max.
I am pretty sure the 20vt is fine at 1.2 bar but you may need a GTECH 1 or 2 chip fitted.
I now use an EBV and the boost has been raised to 1.35 bar.

Well I've ordered a boost gauge.
How much is the chip? Is it easy to fit?

A guy called GrahamL used to sell them on the FCCUK but they should have them on fleabay.
It is pretty easy, maybe a 10 minute job.
All you have to do is take the ECU put of the car which I think is in the passenger well and then swap the chip.
The chip makes a hell of a difference maybe adding 20 to 30 bhp and also stops the boost limit in 1st and 2nd gear.
Make sure it is a GTECH 1 and not a GTECH 2.Both excellent chips but you may need your fueling checked with the the GTECH 2.
Ask Roger when you see him,he will know all about them.
Probably the cheapest and best mod you can do when on a budget.

Thanks!

For my sins, I have now ordered a Gtec1 chip. I'll set the manual boost controller limit to 1.1 Bar. I have a stock car and really don't want to blow anything. Have no idea how to fit it. Maybe roger can...
Ordered a boost gauge to go with it. Its a replacement clock one.
Forge Dump valve has arrived so will fit that too.

Rumour has it that the Gtec1 actually improves fuel economy??

Not too sure about that as you will be booting it everywhere :D
I am sure Roger will sort out the chip for you....it really is an easy job.
The GTECH 1 lets it boost to 1.2 bar so you will be decreasing the boost in effect with the PRV turned down to 1 bar.
I would ask Roger about it when you see him next.
Fitting the boost gauge is not too bad either....a biiger job than the chip mind.

They're both easy, I'd suggest having a go yourself, you'll get to know your motor better! There's guides for both on Fccuk.
I second that (y)
They really are easy.
Those 2 jobs and a K&N cone filter were the first jobs I did on my coupe.........over 5 years ago
The coupe before this one I should say.
TBH that is half the fun of owning the coupe, doing the small jobs yourself and leaving the biggies to the experts

As did I on my first one, Okay I took a few hours doing it in slow-time, but it wasn't difficult (I'm not technically minded) and the sense of satisfaction and knowledge about the cars workings was well worth it. Took me an hour to do both jobs on new coop, easy when you know how :D

Thanks guys.

As a matter of interest, what's the best way to run the cables for the boost gauge to the engine compartment?
Do I need to drill any holes?
I know how to take the centre dash off and remove the clock. Need to replace one of the bulbs there too while I'm at it.

Just to go back to my original point. I've noticed that if I don't floor it, but push the accelerator half way, I am getting much better acceleration in third. Can really feel the boost kick in. If however, I floor it from 2000 rpm, I don't get the big push. I'm thinking the mixture is not quite right. Maybe the oxygen sensor? Any ideas?

I will try to get pics for you when I get time regarding the cable run and where to plumb in the boost gauge.
There is no need to drill any holes BTW
Sounds to me like it's in your mind about the boost in third.
Why are you changing up to third at 2000rpm ?
Try taking it up to 4 to 5000 rpm in second and then change up........when I boot it,I red line it in second gear after my remap and the limiter increase.
I obviously don't give it a booting all the time, just now and again.

I'll try and install it this week and see what happens.
