Biodiesel (waste veg oil)

Biodiesel (waste veg oil)

must admit interested in all these bio cars in this weather especially the flow properties of veg

or are you all on derv now

I'm still on my autumnal mix - 1 gallon veg to 9 diesel and despite the recent negative temps I've had no problems either running or idling. I've got about 100 miles of motoring left before I refuel & if the temps continue like this I'll probably not add any veg oil.

im still running on 100% homebrew biodiesel (because the tank was just filled before the cold weather started)

but have i am parking it in the gararge overnight just to be on the safe side, but not had any problems.

you can get a winter additive for homebrewed biodiesel have a look at www.fenlandbiodieselprocessors.co.uk for more info on it.

am now saving £1.05 a litre :):)

im looking at starting making biodiesel, and at the moment sludgeguts method seems the best way to me. i was wondering what your method was?

I had to go on a run today, about 200-odd miles so as the weather was rather warm (a balmy 6 deg) I decided to put in a couple of gallons of WVO then fill with diesel (I'd previously filled the tank with neat diesel last week whenit wass really cold). So, on my 1:4 mix I went on my way.
I've now got half a tank with a 1:4 mix and as the weather is due to get colder next week I'll top up with diesel tomorrow - probably take about 20 - 25 litres.

sorry for the delay in getting back to you with this.

heres the short version.

1, heat oil (i used waste oil) to 60'-65' and it is sprayed back on its self via a "shower head" water evaporates off
2, let it settle and do titration test to work out how much potssium hydroxide to use per litre
3, mix potassium and methanol (200ml per L)
4, mix step 3 with oil and pump it round for an hour (just to encourage the reaction)
5, let it settle and drain of the gylcerine.
6, wash with water (fine spray)-(to remove any remaining gylcerine and methoxide{step 3}
7, heat to 60' and it is sprayed back on its self via a "shower head" water evaporates off.
8, when it looks crystal clear filter to 5 micron.
9, back up and fill up :D

my home built machine can do 100L in 8 hours but i normally spread it over a few days
if you need detailed info let me know or look at the links ive posted in this thread

Cheers Chris

At £1.32 for a litre of dino I decided the dobbin is going to get more of a blend than it's ever had. Today I chucked in 20 litres dino and 10 of filtered WVO.
The tank has a supposed 60 litre capacity - I reckon the actual fuel capacity wil be closer to 50/55litres max.
Anyhoo, I hope to increase this ratio over the next few fills, even 20 litres wvo will have saved me £26 per fill.
BTW percyhahn, I just simply cold filter my WVO through J cloths then a 1micron bag filter, add 3% petrol to improve viscosity (and maybe even the burn) then blend with diesel in the tank.
I don't like the idea of mucking about with quantities of caustic chemicals (and some even getting into the car?).

Last couple of days we've seen negative numbers here - this has really helped my cold filter process.
I've sped things up a bit. As the oil is in a 20litre can, I can't see what's going on so I give it a bit of a shake and transfer contents to some 5litre plastic juice bottles. The fats solidify really nicely allowing me to gently pour the clear, beautiful golden nectar :)rolleyes:) off the top into my filter, allowing me to stop as the fats start to move towards the neck. Do this with each bottle then simply combine the bottles for a final settle.

I'm assuming that settling out the fats etc will help. the oil will obviously be quite viscous in cold weather but I add 3% petrol. Also, I assume the anti-waxing additives in diesel (along with the many other ingredients) will also help the veg oil as it is added to the tank.

Are you peeps still using Biodiesel?

I'm looking into this at the moment as since April 2012 (10 months) ive consumed almost 3.5k liters of diesel setting me back an almighty £4.6k.

Just wondered if you guys would recommend this to me?
Are the modern Multijet engines capable of using it without any changes?
I see you guys say about increased service intervals, if so how often?
