Technical Bilstein front shocks - howto?

I am not Dutch, just live in the Netherlands for a while. What you saying is that the screw should be able to withstand F**** Tight Tourque and I do have a case...

'incredibly tight'
The Irish version of this is 'torque it until your elbow clicks'

I went the non-advised route for removing the shock tops by undoing everything and f***ing it at the floor - works a treat but stuff flies everywhere. Don't do it this way children, its all good fun until someone loses an eye - I have no regard for my personal safety.

Pretty please tell me one more thing. What size thread this is (I mean the "jump" of the thread, not the diameter). I was at a store (non-car store though, those close by 12 on sat. here) today where they had tons of thread dies (hq too), but they said this is not a standard size (for them) and they cannot help me.

Cheers,

Its all fair enough undoing the top nut, with your foot against the top bearing, making the shock and spring fly across the garden...

But you will need spring compressors to get the new spring on!
I fitted -40mm Bilsteins to the car and didn't need spring compressors to get it all back together. But I am very strong and technically brilliant:rolleyes: NOT! Again, the spring didn't fly off anywhere and the ball bearings fell about the floor but were easy to find and refit.

Woj - those guys are lying - it is a standard metric thread and although I have used a digital caliper to measure my Bilstein in the dark I am certain it is an M12x1mm thread i.e. it has a 1mm pitch.

They claimed the stuff they had was non-metric (pitch-wise). The guy showed me a screw for which they have the thread die and indeed it was different pitch. I don't know enough about screws (shows ha, messed up one that was supposed to be tough ) and screw making so I did not argue. /Woj

Non-metric? In the middle of Holland? Shurely schmoking shomething? I would expect the worst tool shop in the world to have M12x1.5 but be able to source or direct you to M12x1.0. It sounds like you arrived at five minutes to closing and they weren't interested.

/off topic/ I was in my local auto factors yesterday when this old dear with a sky blue metallic '97 Cinq S comes in with a red rear bumper off a Sporting looking for an aerosol can of sky blue to paint it with. Sure enough the bumper on hers was in bits but can you imagine what it looks like by now? /off topic/

Sooo, you would not believe it, but I got money back from Bilstein for the broken shock.
Moreover, when I took it off to give it back to them for inspection two weeks ago (got a new one immediately, but had to pay for it and wait for them to decide if they will replace it for free) and took a closer look at the broken thread it actually did not look so good at all.

In any case, 75 euro in my pocket, time for some more work... :D

Cheers,

Woj

FYI the nut in question is a M12 x 1.25 (Metric SuperFine) Nyloc nut - I know as Ive just minced one with an angle grinder as the shock top mount is a tad knackered!!
