your not so bad on this one you do recommend Selenia even if you don't keep up with their latest R&D;)

Out of necessity since the wife has a Fiat still under warranty..if she decides to keep it after the warranty period then I will whack in some Mobil..Oh crap I said the fobbiden word ..dont ban me please dave ..:nerner::p :D

halfords when people have asked for a cheaper alternative as long as they know its not the best option. crap like castrol has so many additives there is hardly any oil left in it. racing with them at high revs so they burn off is not so bad, use them for normal driving and they just turn to black sludge.
I've given you a chance to back-up these biased views and yet you're clearly at a loss to support them.

If you can't make constructive posts then please refrain from posting as you're effectively just spamming this thread.

Can we have an end to this dross now please.

here is one https://www.fiatforum.com/stilo/47041-abarth-servicing-costs.html?p=548343 note frand also was using castrol in that thread and we all know what happened to his engine. there is more on the alfa145 forum but that is down atm.

castrol seemed to have some how got all their links on black sludge to show in the top results on google, it used to be the first half a dozen pages all had links to forums with fed up peoples posts

you can use what you want but as staff here you must say its not whats recommended and is your personal choice,

Fiat obviously reccomend Selina as they own the brand, apart from the cost and availability I see nothing wrong with using Selina. It's a good oil and of course is easiest to reccomend since it covers the required grades and specifications.

Of course I also know there is nothing wrong with using other oils. My diesels ran fine on generic oil from Partco and the Tipo thrives on the Millers. If other oils destroyed engines then I think we would have heard about it on the news. I'm sure Fiat engines are not that different from other manufacturers that they self-combust if you don't use Fiat branded oils.

Dave, I'll give you marks for trying but in all honesty those links aren't going to impress anybody. An old 2004 thread with someone saying "Castrol Magnetec is rubbish" and that's about it.

Magnetec hasn't been recommended once in this thread and personally I've NEVER recommended it to anyone - as it's a cheap oil.

Castrol Edge on the other hand is a leading class fully synthetic oil which is up with the very best in the marketplace.

you havent provided links to anyone who has done over 50k on castrol edge in a 2.4 yet either

How about mobil 1 10w40? I having a super deal from a garage friend who changes my 4.7L of oil for 47€

Selenia oil jumps to 73€

The garage owner speaks well of mobil 1, he end up using it on all cars and wont switch to other brands.
But I'm a bit afraid of making the jump.

To jump in to this clearly heated debate, I have used Castrol gtx magnatec on all my cars for the last 8 years or so. I buy in bulk for cheap. It's been in Alfa Romeos, Audis, Fords and Fiats. Longest spell was 4 years and maybe 45-50k in a 156 selespeed. I also asked for it come service time. Never had any bother. In fact on older engines quietened them down nicely. I still use it to top up, but my garage uses Shell lubes now so it gets 10w40 helix ultra I think. I have topped up less than 5 litres in 3 years.

got it :)

but yours is 0w fully synthetic. For the price I get mine, I doubt is fully synthetic.

Just thought I'd add to this 'best oil' thread. Took my abarth to my local garage for a service and they put Lucas Oil 10w40 in it. Within about 200/300 miles I'd topped up about a litre+ of oil and wasn't even driven hard. I then tried the selenia racing oil and it's done over 500 miles and the oil hasn't moved on the dip stick

oil with lots of additives disappears quick, engines don't burn it it just evaporates

thats good info.

My selenia 10w40 was disappearing at a rate of 0.3L per 1000km.

Now I have mobil 10w40 and it seems to drink about the same. Early to tell.

I also converted the car to LPG. As I understand, LPG will clean my engine from carbon deposits. As a result, oil consumption will increase. If it gets absurd, I'll try 10w60. thanks for info.

Dave, I didn't know about that. thanks

- Where do you live. - Austria
- Is it hot. - In summer yes
- Is it cold. - In winter yes
- Is it a worn engine. - No, completely new
- How much do you drive. - 10.000-15.000 kilometers a year?
- How do you drive. - Not like a granny.. from time to time I love to push the pedal to the medal ! :p
- How far has the motor travelled. - 1400 kilometers
- Does it use oil. - No idea :S
- Age of engine. - 3-4 Months

Thought about the mobil1 peak life 5w-50.. or maybe selenia performer 5w-40.. or selenia racing 10w-60 ?

The real question you have to ask yourself, in my opinion is what do you actually expect from that oil? Selenia, Mobil, Yacco, Agip, Motul or any quality brand will do the job just fine and you'll do hundreds of thousands of miles and your engine would neither seize nor it would eat its bearings. If you want to be sure you got the best one go to either of these brands website, look what they recommend and get the most expensive one. To avoid any experiments just put in what the book says and change it frequently. As a previous poster already stated you'll get as many opinions as there are members on this forum and you'll never hear that any of them had any problems with Selenia and Mobil + how long do you plan on keeping this car? If you want a specs comparison chart I can send you one. The best of the best according to manufacturer’s specifications is Mobil 1 New Life 0W40 but I don't know if that's the right one for the 2.4 petrol. If the book says 10W60 get an oil that has a viscosity of XW50~60 from what I've heard it is designed for a thicker oil. In conclusion get an oil that's been tested with your engine and has Fiat approvals

You definitely have an increased oil consumption. Do you have blue smoke coming out sometimes? I also drive on LPG and it does not burn any oil the same as it did before that. LPG also would not clean any deposits you have on valves, camshafts and any other engine parts whatsoever. The best thing LPG can do is micro welds on your valves because of lack of the cooling action from evaporating petrol droplets. It also won't dilute the oil on cold days.. but you most likely start on petrol so it's the same
