HI
driving along along BANG, but otherwise nothing to see or hear. At a set of lights when I applied the handbrake and it did not come up as far as before I set off. When I stopped the drivers side hub was Hot and smelly

Any ideas? I did search before posting

Re: BANG, handbrake Rear Hub

Hi THANKS,

I took the drum off and the linings fell out, they dropped right off the shoes.

Pistons have not retracted into the cylinders

I suppose I will have it trailered to a garage cos I am too old to mess with it.

The other choice would be get some shoes, swap them and drive it to a garage with a hot drum.

Hi
not been well so it took me until today to get back to the car

The drums seem OK, I did not check internal size but no lip.:)

Wheel cylinders seem OK:)

I can not get the drum back on cos it is too small to go over the shoes. In the old days I would have wound the shoes towards the axle. THEN put the drum on and adjusted the shoes back to a sensible position but.... I can not find any adjuster.

The shoes seem to be snagged on the handbrake operating lever.

Any one able to tell me where to find the adjuster?

BTW The springs were a problem to get off and then again to get on.:bang:

Thanks
George

Those springs are my public enemy number one !!!

The springs are easy to get off (with the right tool)

And easy enough to get on again. Hook the spring on one end, use the "tool" to expand it, pop a screwdriver into the unattached end, poke the end into the hole where you want the spring, let the spring run down toward the hole and finally poke the end in.

Easy peasy.

Hi
yep the tool would have been good. Thanks for letting me know

I worked out the screwdriver thing after about 2 hours. The springs dropped in within 5 minutes.

extravaganza
I screw in two wheel bolts clamp a mole grip to the spring and use a pair of long nose pliers to feed the spring capturing the pliers and mole grip in the cut out in the hub and rotating the hub with a long 1/2 inch bar to force the pliers mole grip and spring toward's the hole in brake shoe
I need this cause of arthritis.
don't have trouble removing the springs
