Stilatos am happy for you and the result you got (y) Would sure be good if somebody could come up with a part no. for the 5dr bushes... after new front springs at 36,500 miles and Mrs WNWL keen to buy a Caravan sure rear axle bushes will be on the shopping list sometime soon :(

THx guys this was an ongoing problem for some time now until recently when the problem really hit the fan. i got the car back and you can tell the back has stiffened and follows the road more better and smoother. Workmanship cost me a bit 240 euros total with 36 euros costing for bushings, alignment cost, and brake fluid since he had to take the whole axle assembly down.

Hi i have just bought rear suspension bushes for my punto at £13.98 each,i dont know if its the same for your car,but be warned its a real sod of a job me and my son have taken 4 hours so far and they are still not sitting right:cry:

Are these bushes easily visible on a Stilo, just thought i'd check condition of mine next time i'm underneath her.

had the same problem with my 52 plate 1'9jtd multiwagon.
Failed the M.O.T. as they were so bad
Garage replaced bushes for £195!!!! inc. vat and labour. It took all day because they broke the rear brake pipes but replaced these for no extra charge
Feels like i'm driving a new car now ride is so smooth over bumps i find myself aiming for them lol

Tool to replace rear axle bushes

Hi,

First off, great informative forum. I'm based in Malta and recently the rear of the car has started to bang when going over uneven roads. At first I thought it was the shocks but had the car jacked up and checked and its the rear axle bushes, there's a alot of play. No thanks to our bumpy roads I guess.

Took it to a mechanic who said on most cars they can be easily changed, but apparently on the Stilo you need a special press to remove the bushes and replace them which apparents costs 10K+? Not sure if anyone can validate this as I am being told my only option is to replace the axle which costs close to £500 and considering each bush is like £15 aint too keen on the axle idea.

Any suggestions would be welcome, maybe some of you guys have done this already or know how it should be done.

Yep thats correct ..dirty great big hydraulic press is used to remove the old bushes and press in the new ones ..total outlay by the garage for this is massive and thats why the job is so expensive :(

I have the same problem and just posted a question about whether a special/tool or press is needed to do the job as been told the same about being a bugger to do the replacement which is why most places try and get you to replace the axle/sub frame. As I'm in Malta my only other choice to pop across on the boat and take it to a Fiat dealer in Sicily hoping they have the right kit if I can get confirmation on this mysterious special press!

Thanks for your reply. Take it this is not a regular 20 ton press that you see in some private garages, but a much larger specialized type? The guy I spoke to said he had a 20 ton press that when he took someone elses axle to an engineering shop with a massive press they did the bushes but bent the axle a bit. Hence his claim that this special press was specially designed for axles or something? Does that make sense?

Hi All

My local backstreet mechanic done mine he used an air chisel to remove the old bushes not sure how he fitted the new ones £150 bargain. The job was done without removing the axle completely.

The chap who did my rear axle bush had a quite small(in physical size) 10 tonne press. Did the job in 4 hours. He showed me the old bushes. Apparently he pushed the rubber centre out in the press, and then hacksawed through the thin outer metal part quite easily. He was a FIAT specialist, but had never done this particular job on a Stilo, said that he had no problem at all with it. I was quoted £1000 for the local Fiat dealer to do it. They said that they could not get the bushes, and would have to replace the beam. They were a bit surprised when I told them I had a set in the car. The job cost £169 + £38 for the bushes.

I reckon my Multiwagon bushes are done too.

Does anyone know a good garage in Lincolnshire/Nottinghamshire that will replace them without fleecing me ?

Also, a bit confused .... is the bush part number 50706505 good for multiwagons ?

The part number mentioned by pnl is actually the rear bush for the bravo many Fiat dealers don’t know it fits the stilo.
I changed mine myself about six hours both sides.
Things I learned.
The bush is filled with oil when the oil leaks out the bush starts knocking, when you look at a knackered bush it looks the same as a good one.
Drop the axle completely it’s far easier, four bolts, brake pipes and the hand brake cable and it’s off.
Puncture the rubber part of the bush with something sharp you can then knock the centre out quit easily (watch out for the oil).
Pass a hacksaw through the centre and cut the metal outer sleeve and knock out with a chisel, don’t try to chisel it out without cutting with hacksaw, if you damage the carrier it makes it harder to get the new one in.
That’s the easy bit.
To replace you will need some heavy gauge steel plate to make up a couple of collars, some M10 stud nuts washers.

my suspension has also been giving me problems. Loud banging on pot holes terrible ride. Replaced the shocks And noticed the bushes had collapsed. Cant believe the suspension is so shoddy. I have read that you can buy the bushes but can anyone tell me if you can replace them yourself. I have replaced some on a landrover but it didnt require a vice press just a case of burning out the old and replacing with poly bushes that slotted inside on another.

Bugger of a job on the stilo apparently and a press make it a lot easier to extract and refit the bushes..and no polly bushes available for the stilo either.:(

Takes a day to do and aint that hard if you've got a bit of common sense and a blacksmiths vice to press the new ones in with, bushes are £15 quid each from fiat.

Rear suspension bush leaking something

ok this is a bit of wierd one, i thought these bushes were dry but on moving the car this morning i was greeted with a couple of puddles on the drive that looked like oil.

i checked for brake fluid pipe leaks straight away but pipes are all fine and nothing leaking as reservoir still at same level as 3 weeks ago. I noticed all this fluid had also been splashing onto the tyre so there were spots on my mudflap and tail pipe, i noticed these on wed and thought i had driven through something.

behind the wheel is dry. then i noticed the bush is were the leak is - where the axel joins and pivots on the chassis. This is supposed to be dry as i understood it, and couldnt see anything else.

Took it to a local mechanic who confirmed the fluid isnt brake fluid/petrol/engine oil and it has no smell, is oily and dark brown/blacky in colour, like used engine oil. H ealso confirmed all brake lines look ok and it isnt leaking from above, just from this bush. He thinks either someone (ie fiat when last service) sprayed a lubricant in it and with the heat thats come about in the last two days has made it thinner or as a long shot i have run over something, but it drips too much for that once wiped down. whatever it was he couldnt see anything wrong and didnt class it as dangerous, went to another garage who said the same so ran to a fiat dealer who had a look and again confirmed all the above and his tech said it didnt taste like oil or usual fluids so suspects when serviced lube was added to the bush and its started to break down now and create this mess, and again as brake lines and fluid level ok, theres nothing else it could be as shock is too far away and thats not leaking. Going to see what happens over next few weeks but it is wierd
