General Attempted in break in?

The steering lock is never usualy on, I think the ECU detected an introder. I unlock it I simply had to lock and unlock the door with my key and then it allowed me to put the key in the ignition. Before that I could not turn the ignition at all.

Not wanting to sounds offensive, but I think it might have been phycological (sp?). The ECU cannot detect intruders unfortunatly nore does it engauge/disengauge the steering lock.

Would moving the wheel when the ignition is off cause the lock to engage? I guess if they were trying to take the radio they would have accidently knocked the steering. I do know I could not put the key in the ignition at all, figuring out it was thinking I was I theif I locked the car and unlocked it then it worked fine. This would just be a simple computer program surely? The entire car is just a CAMBUS. My ten year old Corsa had a similar feature.

The steering lock is entirly stand alone, and mechanical with the key.

Lock is enguaged when you remove the key (note the click) and then often requires moving the wheel for the locking pin to lock into place in the column correctly.

Wheel sometimes needs a jiggle when putting key in to relase the lock if its got pressure on it, but never heard of, or had similar to what you discribe, and I've fiddled with radios in my 04 Stilo, and Sisters Panda which use probably the same steering lock set-up and haven't had similar happen.

Could just be a strange coincodence

For all of our joking about ghosts, that is truly awful. Change the surround or upgrade to a double-DIN HU and you will feel better...... have a Rotweiller sleep on the back seat at night - that will make you feel brilliant :)

The problem is my finance deal says I am not allowed to 'modify' the car :( but I suppose I could keep the original head unit etc ;) After the deal ends I will probably keep the car anyway.

How difficult will it be to source a double hight height head unit? I would need one out of a later panda so it matches the same colour as the dash. I know it sounds daft I just like to keep cars as original as possible.

Just discovered the 12 year old VCR no longer works and I don't want to use the PVR as it will wear the hard drive out. I have an external hard drive I can connect to the downstairs PC and I have a spare TV card so I can link it up via that.

I will wire in the security light today and that will make me a bit more relaxed. It is costing me a fortune all these security bits

Don't worry too much about wearing the drive out. I've had a TiVo for near on ten years and have only had to replace the drive once and that was a Samsung Spinpoint that had noticeable vibration from new.

Unlike something like say Sky+ TiVos write to the disk 24/7 so your disk will outlast the time you'll have the car.

So, you did have intruders, little b*ggers.

As for security cameras, the cheapest option I found was a PIR (150w lamp) with inbuilt camera. Works with SD cards for recording digitally. Was only about £70. Resolution is fair for a cheapo camera, certainly enough to see peoples faces fine. Might be worth a thought.

Just been in the car again and it is hardly noticable just some faint screw driver scratches. If I did myself I would not be bothered but I am very angry because some git has been in my car. Just cleaned it all now.

The security light is already up I just disconnected it as it didn't have an RCD but will now just wire one in. With advantage of using a computer is I can put time stamps on the recording which the VCR won't allow me to do.

I wonder if I could buy a cheap device which would allow me to connect my camera via scared and then connect an external USB drive to it? I am also not sure what bit rate to film it at, it is black and white so that will save space.

Just found some brilliant CCTV software. Not fully tested it yet but there is a motion dector on it which detects a change in pixels. I have found on old PCI TV card. I installed it and then used as a capture device for the cheap Argos CCTV camera I bought.

What is happening now is every time somebody walks past my car the security light comes on and it starts to record. I am amazed I have managed to develop such a complex CCTV system from an analogue camera which cost £30 and some freeware software.

I will be able to test it properly tonight ;)

What software is it? I used Yawcam when the pikey cleaners at work were nicking stuff.
You have to be careful setting the motion detector levels. I got a nice shot of the cleaner standing by a cupboard, then another several minutes later with the cupboard open, but nothing inbetween (n)

That sucks. Clearly your burglar is an idiot. What does the standard fit stereo from an Active fetch down the pub these days?

money for nothing, probably get a gram or two for it:rolleyes:

it would be cheaper to just get a new surround, i havent noticed any scratches on mine but i havent checked, i know the storage bit though is abit scuffed up from chuckin stuff in there like phones, bits of metal and wheel bolts haha

You do realise that all you needed to do was turn the steering a little and the key would have turned....

not locking your car would be the main problem. ok it's easily done if doing something about the car such as cleaning it. at the end of the day though for all the cameras in the world your insurance company won't pay out if you leave your car unlocked!

don't know if the panda is the same but with most cars it's often obvious to someone looking in if a car is locked or not, the pins, or even trying the handle doesn't usually set an alarm off. so the oppurtunity is there if noticed.

if your car has an immobiliser then they usually have a 30s after unlocking to start engine before cutting in or something similar. surely all new cars do?

they have the code imobiliser its more passive than some of the aftermarket units with a fob

there is a microchip in the key and a radio coil in the shroud around the ignition barrel

so unless the car key is in the ignition and the chip is recognised by the car it wont start..
