astra coupe

Didnt realise they were that cheap!

Was hoping you would look elsewhere as its sold now!

i went to have an inspection and test drive yesterday after work.
its immaculate and drives like a new car. i love that 2.2 ecotec.

centre console is a bit shabby so i'm spraying it silver same as i did on my alfa. other than that its as perfect as an X reg car could be.

didnt take much haggling to get it for £2k. not a bad price for a 7.5 year old car with 65k. i'm picking it up this evening at 7pm.

OMFG i own a vauxhall !!!

so that means the alfa will be going on ebay this weekend for £2k 'buy it now'. i really will miss her, she's been a great car and i've loved every minute. tbh i think i'll cry when she sells.

right i'm off to ebay to buy a chav bonnet grill :)

well i've done 100miles in the astra now and i'm still smiling from ear to ear, but there are a few "issues" tbh.

- classic VX gearchange. its sloppy and you cant feel anything, surely designed for a small woman.

- suspension is a strange combination of hard ride and soft handling, which is completely backward. it rolls a bit more on corners than i like, and while grip is fine it doesn't make you feel very confident in the car's ability. i suspect this issue is only in my brain because i'm comparing it to the alfa, and tbh very few cars could compare well in terms of getting the right balance of ride and handling. dont get me wrong the astra goes round corners fine, it just doesnt feel as good when you do it.

- the steering seems nicely weighted at first, but when you give it some abuse on a nice B road it suddenly feels light and worst of all it feels inaccurate. you cant turn in as nicely as you can with the alfa, and the front end seems to drift a little bit so you're correcting the steering to compensate fairly often.

- the throttle response is terrible. these modern fly-by-wire cars are all the same, you put your foot down and then its almost like turbo lag waiting for something to happen. you quickly get used to it, but imo a cable is the one and only thing that should connect your accelerator pedal to the throttle body.

- there isnt enough room for my right foot so i get cramp keeping it at a funny angle when crusing at constant speeds (altho cruise control sorts that out when you're on the big roads)

- the interior it a little bit dated and styled to bore, although the quality is good and i'm sure a few cans of silver spray paint and a couple of mods will smarten it up nicely.

however, there are so many good points that i really cant list them all. that ecotec engine loves to be thrashed, and on bits of road where my alfa was hitting 70mph the astra is hitting slightly over 80mph, which is a huge difference. the midrange pull is immense, you can overtake as easily as picking your nose. the brakes are superb, easily the best brakes out of any car i've owned. it must be the most practicle coupe ever made, the boot is huge and i can sit in the back comfortably, and the rear seats fold down.

plus i'm pleased with the deal i got. it is as close to brand new condition as an X reg car could ever be. the bodywork is immaculate and it still drives like a new car.

i've taken the alfa to work today, and tbh its so much better in every possible way. i really dont want to sell it.

the worst thing about the astra is the stalks, they click in a horrible cheap and nasty way, they feel really cheap, and they even look crap. how hard is it to make decent stalks ffs?!

Having second thoughts? :nerner:. Serves you right for thinking any vauxhall is better than the Alfa :p

yeah i'm having regrets already but i've got to keep the astra for a year so i'll just have to get used to it. at least the fuel economy is better (at least 30mpg so far :ROFLMAO:)

i'm thinking about fitting vectra stalks, well i'm going to see if its possible anyway.

I thought you were going to buy an economical car?. I got 33mpg from my 2.0TS :) once got 37mpg with mostly motorway .

yeah if you stay below 3500rpm at all times you can hit mid 30s, but you'll also go to hell for crimes against a twinspark.

that grill that all the chavs have,
Haha don’t all chavs get a coupon for that grill on their 16th birthday?

The big trademark V really ruins the looks of all Vauxhalls so the grill is a must (y)

Shame to see the Alfa go but good luck with it jug. The only Vauxhall I have driven was a corsa and I found the gear stick to be especially sloppy and crap also hand break and stalks where crap.

 So what’s next anyway blue LED windscreen washer jets?
