Annoying adverts on FF

Annoying adverts on FF

am i right in thinking ben that you don't know where these are coming from, suggesting some spyware or similar has found a way through. You'll have to bear with me, i'm not that up on this kinda thing.

could i suggest people try downloading 'spybot - search and destroy'. Is free and very good, just google it ;). Since i installed it i get no popups ever on any site.
Nah, I know where they are coming from, but there is no easy option to turn them off.... Popups and Popunders have their own "toggle" (which is off) - but these ones don't ....

If it helps Ben I can only get the safecount ad when viewing the forum as a guest.

Scratch that. Came up when logged in too.

Ben, maybe it's time to think about offering up a 'subscription' option. People pay £X a year for an ad free forum. It should help ease forum costs, depending on how much revenue per user the ads raise ATM. The majority of forums that I visit that are a similar size to FF have something like this. It'll come to a point where you'll no longer be able to afford/want to pay for the forum's costs as you do now.

That's indeed an interesting idea, however, to follow the "FF ethos", the fee could only remove the adverts (ie - it's always been my idea that anyone can access everything on the forum without needing to pay)

I'm sure some calculation needs to be done somehow to work out what the yearly rate should be (taking revenue and member amounts into account) - lol - I'll be seeing my gf next week, she's doing an MBA, so I'm sure she can help out :)

I guess the question is though, are they really that annoying that you'd want to pay to get them removed??

Wrong question Ben,

"Do you want to have a warm fluffy feeling ? do you want to help out your fellow FF ? Would you like to help contribute to our forum's costs ? Would you like NO adverts ? Would you like to be a fully paid up member ? "

Silly question time now - could you use an icon like the cup to show who has coughed up for membership ?

Trev

Lol - you can tell I'm not a businessman ... haha

I'm going to get some new icons commisioned I think, as we have a few different "banners" now - Donated and Trader for example.

I don't like the word "Membership" though, that makes us sound like a club again - but yeah, could be something ... just needs to be worded correctly ;)

Well strictly speaking, non donated members can't access the Member Offers.

Crack out the calculator. No point discussing it if it's a no-go from the start.

Yeah but that's down to the companies involved - not an FF rule (they won't allow the offers unless someone has given "something")

I'll get some tracking code going, to see how the revenue currently splits (y)

Not sure if this is relevant, just got this popup again and it's with the Xerox ad. again, same as yesterday.

Dave.

Personally i dont mind adverts as long as they arent these annoying poppy-up ones that follow the scrolling (i have been getting them on my Vista laptop and XP pc)

if your thinking of introducing a membership or subscription fee it may put off a few people who make regular, useful contributions (not me i usually talk arse)

Facebooks free- how does their model work?

the only real one that causes concern for me is the one showing blokes torsos that are far more ripped up than the average man.

at work the forum loads the banners, then these ads then takes about 10 seconds before the rest of the page loads, leaving naked mens muscly torsos on screen and colleagues thinking i listen to abba and like musicals

It seems that popup is linked to the Xerox ... but as I'm in a different country to you lot, I don't get those ads anyway. The asian brides one comes up a few times, but then, I don't move the mouse over it - so it doesn't popup for me either :p

Anyway, it's just an option for people if the ads really bother them that much - and somethign people had asked abotu for a while (how to make regular donations).

No pressure to use it - it'll balance out anyway :)
