Hi everyone,

New to this forum.

Looking at changing the alternator on my 1.6 16v '02 Stilo. Was my dad's, he no longer uses it so I've taken it.

Alternator completely died on me last week. New one on its way.

Is this a DIY job? Looked up on 'generic' alternator changes, the job seems straight forward. It's in a relatively accessible position.

Just need a general guide, some tips and hints, specialised tools and anything I should look out for in particular.

Hopefully attempt it tomorrow evening.

Regards,

Richie

Alright Richie...
Saw your PM this morning, then saw this post. Stilo is really easy compared to something like the Cinq.

Disconnect the battery
Belt off
disconnect electrics from rear of alternator and remove the 2 bolts holding it in...

Fitting is reverse of removal but on the bottom mount iirc it has a large 27mm?? Cam nut which sets the tension before final tightening.

Tension should be sufficient that you can twist the belt through 90 degrees by hand with out excessive force on its longest run.

Hi Rich,

Thanks for your reply.

Is it best to attack it from underneath? Remove the wheel arch etc?

Also, bit unsure on where/how the tension is released on the belt to get the alternator off in the first place.

Are you replacing the belt? If so just cut it with a stanley knife.

It is possible to do it from the top.

If youre keeping and reusing when you release the mounting bolts you will have to rotate the cam nut round.

So this job isn't as easy as I thought?

The top attachment bolt came out no problem at all, small enough, about 12mm.

Bottom one- absolutely not a clue how to get this one out????
Also took the bottom bolt out of the tensioner pulley bracket, cannot get the top one undone to rotate the bracket to release the tension.

Am I doing this wrong???

Can't post pictures because it's not letting me. I haven't made enough posts yet. But can send photos of needs be.

Helllllpppppp
