Technical Alternator Belt

Hi peoples,

I'm currently having a go at changing the head gasket on my punto 60S (via the Haynes manual) and am at the stage where i need to remove the alternator belt. After jacking up and supporting the front of the car, and removing the driver side wheel, when i tried to unbolt the belt guard it just rotated the whole thing, is there an easy way of stopping the guard from rotating so i can get the bolts off?

Also, as i inadvertantly rotated the belt, would this have buggered up anything? Or is it only when one belt moves without the other?

dont know about how ti stop it moving but its ok to move if everything moves. prob only ocurs if you move something round with belts off as then stuff is not lined up

My dad suggested putting the car into first gear, which i tried but it didn't seem to make any difference...
