just remember that criminals don't like being beaten, and will deliberately cause damage if they can't get what they want, more so then if they get a clean get away.

a friend once had some moron try and steal his car radio when they found they couldn't get it out they hammered a screwdriver through it and the heating control panel

Bank tellers have several of these packs near their station at all times. A pack is put in "safe" mode by attaching it to a special magnetic plate. During a robbery, a teller tries to slip one of the dye packs into the money bag without the thief noticing.

u would do that for 10 squid per hour and risk getting killed for employer? no thanks-
all that money is insured anyway

They mentioned special 'wads' of notes with the packs already inside so as far as the robber knows, they are getting wads of notes. And why would the teller get killed? Aren't they behind bulletproof glass?

Anyway, to the point of the link - just wondering about ways to booby trap the car & this one sprang to mind.

ive just made some plates up, so they carnt get at the 10mm nut, (this is 16v mind)

turning the nuts upside down will slow them down abit too,

they have aflat helmet on the nut, so if you turn them upside down
so the flat -is at the top you carnt get 10mm spanner in there, ;)

Any idea what's happening to them?

I mean, if I was pinching ECUs, I'd pinch something that was easily mapped, reliable, etc. etc.

If folk started engraving their house number and postcodes on them, you can be sure the market would dry up fast!

they are going to eastern europe i believe
obviously some are going on ebay virginised
remember we arent talking £20 m2 rubbish here were talking p3 to p5 which command £120 virginised, a process that can now be accomplished very cheaply if you know how

istill dont get why there stealing them,

there is scrapyards full of punto's just a short way from here,
and you can buy em for peanuts, theres no need to steal anything,

ithink theres more too it, @ s&b you posted a pic up a shortwhile ago iirc theyre taking chunk of loom with them from what iseen of the pic,

this is what ifind weird why take the loom?

Going in blind here - since I have no idea what these things look like, where they are or how to get one out.

Those shear nuts in an earlier post - if the ECU later fails, how does one remove the threaded cones?

Just wondering if it would be possible to use a welder?
Maybe put a small tack onto each nut?
Maybe even making a shield out of some decent strength steel & tacking it in place?

What about a 2-way security nut or even a scroll nut - not cheap & the sockets to install these are quite expensive - but the thieves wouldn't be able to remove the ecu.

I think that a really cheapo fix, initially might be to run a simple alarm.
Maybe a really loud siren combined maybe with a very powerful strobe(s) in the engine compartment. maybe run these off a small gel battery kept out of the way (boot/under seat). Use a plunger switch under the bonnet & an isolating switch in the car.
Belt and braces job would be to have two systems running side by side - one running off the car battery, one off its own supply.
Thief pops the lid, gets strobes & sirens, clips the wires on the car battery & still has the lights/noise.
Moving up, link this to fire suppressant system - everything is covered in a thick cloud of dust - a thief would have to wait an age for the cloud to clear before he could see to work.

take the nuts off on put them back on wrong way round

use thread lock first, sorted ;)

but that will only slow them down, :(

(carnt weld near ecu,and its aluminium anyway,)

im awaiting for S&B to post some ideas,:D

Strobes, sirens, gel battery, plunger switch, isolating switch, fire suppressant system .... would be cheaper to just keep a spare ECU in the boot. ;)
.

Sometimes its better to let them get what they are after with minimal damage to the rest of the car, they'll take it anyway but at least your pride and joy is still intact....just a thought.
