Decided i need to replace my air filter been looking online and induction kits seem to be so expensive!

im fitting an abarth kit to my bravo next month and was thinking of using the fog holes for cool air feed hoses.

good or bad idea?

which induction kit should i go for? there is so much choice varying from £30-£250.

was talking to my mate who got a clio sport 172 and he said he got a pipercross viper kit and it increased his bhp by 10 (according to a rolling road).
i drive a 1.6 16v bravo

so far these are the induction kits ive been looking at: -

-BMC/DIA
-BMC/CDA
-Pipercross venom

obviously any other suggestions welcome.
im not fussed on power just want the car to breath properly.

cheers.

you want a cotton gauze filter, brand doesnt matter. its better to have an enclosed filter like the CDA so you can isolate your intake from the hot air in the engine bay. a cold air feed pipe is a good idea, especially on an enclosed filter like a CDA where you'll benefit from increased pressure when moving at speed, but its hard to find the space to fit one on a bravo. i'm using the standard cold air feed which is perfectly adequate, but not great.

i wouldnt remove a foglight for the sake of a cold air feed, just have the pipe near the foglight where the mesh is on the abarth bumper. it will get just as much airflow.

i have a cheap universal cotton induction kit that cost me £10, the quality is just as good as a K&N. plus its blue like my car. i dont understand why people spend hundreds of pounds on a filter, why not use the money to buy faster car? an airfilter for me is all about the induction roar, and for that you need a K&N styler cotton filter that is not enclosed.

i was going to buy the abarth bumper without fogs (found a cheap place that sell them for £115) fogs will cost an extra £50 so i thought why not fill the holes with cold air feed.
ill have a look on ebay for cheap bmc's. some1 is selling one in the classifieds for an alfa 147/159 will this fit?

i dont understand why not because my current induction kit just fits straight onto my intake pipe.

dont need the roar really just want the best air flow i can get!
just got a full system exhaist fitted so the cars plenty loud enough!

cheers.

any filter will fit any car with a small amount of modification, the BMC's are very universal, worse case scenario you'll need an adapter ring.

for maximum airflow you need the least intake restriction so you need maximum surface area. get the biggest filter you can.

Was the clio rolling roaded before the filter or is he going off book bhp.
The only way a filter would give 10bhp extra is if in some rare cases cars are purposefully fitted with restrictors in the inlet pipes ;)

A more realistic figure for a correctly installed filter will be 3bhp. If fitted badly then on hot days it will loose bhp.

The freeflow filter will give slightly better throttle response and can make engine revs slightly free'er. The sound is the main reason for fitting. :)

i recon he's talking ****** but you never know.
i have a foam mushroom filter from halfords. ill proberly just get a k&n or green filter.
i just dont trust my foam 1 to filter all the crap from going into the engine to be honest lol!
as for sound i dont need a beeffier sound ive got a straight through stainless system (with cat) and its loud!

I cleaned my airfilter and have sprayed it with a spray on low calorie cooking oil. This should do the same job yes?

haha, why on earth would you use cooking oil? its organic (veg oil) so it will decompose, feeding mould and bacteria, blocking up the filter element. i'd wash it in diesel overnight and then allow the diesel to dry, this will leave a nice oily residue that catches dirt nicely, but as with any filter oil its not wise to use it on a car with a MAF because you can burn it out or cover it in crap.

Not got a MAF sensor. Well if i see mould on it i will wash it again. What about if it cleaned it and put some WD40 on as i saw in a previous thread. I only used this low calarie oil as i couldnt get into the garage as i dont have a key!

i bought one of these for my alfa last week. its exactly the same as the one i've had on my bravo for a year. quality is as good as k&n, and for £10 inluding delivery you really cant go wrong.

dont use filter oil if you have a MAF.;)

Oh poo....That filter looks the part really...Before i saw this thread i ordered this one....
Universal Performance Air Filter Fits Any Car or Model Item number: 180140153917
1. Will, this do the job? Obviously my air box will have to come out....
2. How would you clean this filter?
I presume my SX TD100 1999V will have a MAF.
3.Will this filter do the job without damaging anything on the car?
( thinking of cleaning the MAF because i have a flat spot at 2000RPM in each gear...Tried REDEX, but doesnt do much...Some injector cleaner worked initially but once i used that fuel in the tank the flat spot came back...)
I thought a clean of the MAF and a better air filter will do the job????

yes clean the MAF,

ebay item 180140153917 is an example of the crapper type of universal filter, its a foam element. i wouldnt bother personally

i had to remove the bottom of my airbox to fit my airfilter. you lower it through the access panel in the wheel arch liner. then make sure you cover up the grill on the wheel arch liner, if you dont your airfilter will get coverd in mud and water.

i got the pipe from a scrapyard bravo, i used the pipe that goes from the intake scoop down to the airbox.

in a scrapyard you can find any hose or pipe you could ever want, and at a bargain price. i used a bravo pipe so it would match, and because it just so happened to be the perfect shape and size.

the 1.6 uses a MAP, there is no MAF ;)
