Technical air con not working

The air con has stopped working on my Croma 1.9 8v. I press the button on the facia, and the light comes on, but there is no response. Can anyone suggest some (simple) things I can check. Is there, for example, a separate fuse that might have gone? What else can I look for? Normally I would expect to feel the compressor engaging, but I don't feel anything.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Maybe a re-gas is a good first step. There is a tread in the Marea section that says some Halford gagages do re-gasing.

Just had mine regassed as it had stopped running cold and learnt that if the system loses enough pressure the a/c will not kick in although all indications look good.

There is a fuse in the fusebox in the engine bay (on my 1.9 16v) and the handbook shows that.

Make sure you use an experienced garage as they exhaust the system first to recover the old charge and ensure the correct amount of lubricate is added to the new charge. Not saying Halfords is not any good but if the level of staff knowledge is like my local one I'd be concerned! Paid £50 but going rate seems to be anywhere between £50 to £75.
