I'm doing an oil service on my son's 2006 1.2 Panda Dynamic (now on 266 000km and going strong). There's a fair bit of oil residue surrounding where the air box fits to the intake. There is a rubber seal/gasket present, which seems to be in good shape, but the air box has a very sloppy fit to the intake. Is this normal or should I be looking to replace the seal?

It feels loose, laterally, on the throttle body, before securing the airbox with the two bolts. I'll have another good look at it tomorrow and post some pics.

Apart from perhaps letting a tiny amount of unfiltered air into the engine, and allowing a little oil misting around the airbox/throttle body connection, it's not otherwise going to cause you a problem. It's upstream of all the airflow controls and sensors, so won't affect running or performance. If you can find another one easily/cheaply, you may as well replace it, but I wouldn't get too stressed about it unless you're about to drive through a windswept desert.

Thanks jrkitching. It's mostly the oil misting that I was concerned about, but if that is normal then I'll leave it be. Where does the oil originate? I tried to dig up some info but the closest I could get is that it could be blow-by as a result of over-filling the sump or from worn rings.

Basically that; you always get some blow by, even with a nearly new, well run in engine. There is always some flow of air (& oil mist) from the crankcase to the intake through the breather hose when the engine is running.

And just to confirm - there is no clamp/ziptie or similar that is installed at the junction of airbox and throttle body? Only the seal/gasket?

Confirmed. I've owned and done all the servicing on my Panda from new; there was never any sort of clamping device used on that connection.

Good news, thanks very much for the info.
