Re: Air bag with a difference

Hmm, noticed something interesting tonight - was giving a colleague a lift home from work, and as we approached his house, he decided to take off his seatbelt before we had stopped [silly boy :p] - I probably did another 300 yards or so before I came to a standstill.

BUT I was expecting a warning to go off [I know the Ulysse goes ape if you do that] - I got nothing

So should I have got a warning? Surely the car would have sensed his presence via the mat, plus the fact no seatbelt was on? Or have the dealership fixed my earlier problem by disconnecting something? Would the passenger airbag go off in a crash, even if the belt was being worn? So many questions! :spin:

Re: Air bag with a difference

Sensor dictates (along with crash sensors) wether to deploy passenger airbag or not dependent of severity of crash,it will deploy it in one of 2 stages, light or heavy crash.
Seat sensor measures size & weight of occupant, thus in a heavy accident it will deploy stage 1(less gas)if the occupant is small/light.If it detects no occupant it will have no need to deploy.

No lights came on at all, which really threw me?!

He is back in the car again tomorrow, so we will try it at speed :D

No light should come on, only the driver's belt is connected to to wires (I think, from what I saw in my 3 years experience of driving my Stilo)

Re: Air bag with a difference

OK I have OCS mat Occupant Classification Sensor ordered and arriving Wednesday. Cheap isn't it at £100 :)

Is there anything else it could be? What concerns me is that the mat senses quite correctly that there's someone there in the seat or not rather than it just being dead

The amber "Passenger Air Bag switched off" light has been flashing quite a bit lately

Sit on seat- ding AIRBAG FAILURE-then red warning airbag light- eventually - STOP ENGINE
Get off seat and it resets

Turning the passenger airbag off manually does nothing to affect the warnings. That's a bit stupid isn't it? Turn the passenger air bag off and the driver still gets warnings to STOP ENGINE. I know -I've turned the blessed thing off- I haven't got a passenger- shut up and let me get on with my driving

Will the airbag ECU just detect the new OCS like a good boy or will it need talking to and shaking hands with a formal introduction as in a proxi alignment?

Ok, that is the same conclusion I got to.

I remember having the passenger airbag warnings, and thought turning it on or off would cure it, or at least stop the warnings, but no.

Plug & go mate, proxy alignment only needed for nodes/modules which have internal clock communicating on the CAN network, like syncronizing watches if you know what I mean.

Re: Air bag with a difference

Thanks T1 :)
Let's hope that does it then and turns the air bag light off. Otherwise I shall attack the dashboard with a hammer drill, snatch the bulb out and eat it

Just got to work out how to take back the seat fabric to fit the mat in.
Pair of scissors, stanley knife anybody?

Techs get 0.8hrs for job so its not that hard.Take seat out, remove side trim bits unclip seat base (OCS mat comes as part of seat foam) swop over & rebuild. At least you will have firmer seat if it dont put light out;) (no knife/scissors needed)

Re: Air bag with a difference

48minutes,that includes getting the car & bringing into workshop & filling out all the paperwork, parts dept etc....oh & wiping off the oily fingerprints on the seat & getting a touch up paint to cover up the scratches after scratching the door;)

Re: Air bag with a difference

Ok Job done. All good. The "BEEP STOP ENGINE" was getting ridiculous towards the end
Many thanks to T1 and all who helped with the diagnosis
I took some photos of the job so I may put together a "How to " in the Stilo guides in case anyone else gets the problem

Managed the job in......48 minutes!:)

Sorry for bringing up a old thread.

Can I ask where you ordered the OCS mat? My dealer quoted me 218 Euros + VAT (21%) + Fitting . I've decided I'd like to try and source it cheaper and fit it myself using Deckchairs guide.

TIA.
