General Ahh POO!!!!!

Well - that's it, I am 'free' or 'unemployed' depending on your point of view, at the moment I have to say I am quite positive and am going to try and keep that way! :)

It was a very odd day, my leaving interview was booked for 11.00 - rather than going into the office at 08.00 as usual I decided to stay at home, clean the b and go in 5 mins before my exit interview and then leave straight after it. I am not one for lamenting over the past and I didn't want to be sat in the office like a spare part so I went in at 11.00, had my interview and was told that I had to stay around until 15.00!! - so, I did the only sensible thing and went to the pub for a couple of hours - still meant that I had to kill half an hour in the office.........

I had to laugh, while I was in my exit interview a couple of the guy's raided the marketing cupboard for frisbies and added company branded hub caps to the b - made me smile................

So, that chapter is now over and the next one begins..........not too sure what I am going to do yet - I think I am going to take a couple of days to re-charge the batteries and then start canvassing.

Microsoft called me out of the blue on Friday and would like to see me, a couple of people who I have worked with in the past have been in contact so I have a few coffee's lined up but nothing of any substance.

It's an odd situation, I have so many options open to me I am not sure what next, I would like a change from project management but not sure what, I am not sure if I want a perm job or contract, quite keen to go and work for a smaller company (bit disillusioned with corporates at the moment!), but what I would really like to do is start my own business - again not sure what yet.

To be honest its early days, I need a couple of days to re-charge and then hope that I may see things slightly more clearly..................

Well, it's been almost 4 weeks since I was made redundant and I have no idea where they have gone - no mods on the b, no decorating in the hall and no new job!

I have put the 'feelers' out but not really applied for anything yet as I cannot decide what I want to do next (a few ideas in mind but the run up to Christmas is dead time as far as recruiting is concerned), to try and keep the wolves from the door while I figure out what my true calling is I mentioned contracting to a couple of people I know and guess what - it looks as if my old employer may want me back as a contractor!

Funny how life is eh? :bang:

it will be weird at first, cuz it will look as if nothing has changed, you'll probably even get your desk back :p

However, a few things WILL have changed, besides the attitude of some people towards you:
First: you'ld be making MORE money (you really should get an hourly rate at least double then what you'ld be making as perm staff)(y)
Second: you now have the power to walk out anytime you want :slayer:

after all, you are your own boss now. However, i would not really sign a deal as being self-employed... there are things like liability and insurance and such. Its way easier to get an Agency and an Umbrella to maximise earnings.
I used Giant (www.giantgroup.com) in the past and they are not bad, and stay quite legal (IR35).
Of course, if you *really* want to maximise earnings as a contractor, you could go with an offshore 'brolly....:D But Inland Revenue WILL nip you in the butt within two years

More info on http://www.contractoruk.com/ :)

Thanks for the info RnRollie - I have not had the T's and C's chat yet but I have a day rate in mind, I also know their sell rates so know what they can afford to pay and still make margin!!

As for setting up a company or going under an umbrella company I don't know what the best way would be. I am going to meet an accountant tomorrow who should be able to advise me what the best way forward is, I hope he is going to say umbrella!

I will let you know how things progress, I don't have a signed contract yet so it could all still fall on its ass but I hope not!!

I used GIANT (different name then) in the 90s. They were OK, but I felt ripped off as you never spoke to the accountant, they just had admins who ran the system.

Of course IR35 has happened since then, so things are a bit more complicated!

I'm not sure I'd like to contract back in a place I'd only just left as a permie. Part of the fun for me was doing different things and being less caught up in the politics.

Anyway, what I really wanted to say is make sure you're seeing an accountant who knows the filed of IT contracting. It's relatively specialised, compared to say a builder :)

:) Hopefully this guy knows what he's talking about - I won't know until I speak to him but will quiz him about IR35.....

As for going back to the same company, I know where you are coming from but I am looking on this as nothing more than a transactional cash based arrangement, no politics, no objectives, no concern about what the share price is doing, no concern over a weak management structure! Ideally I would like to go with a new company doing a new and exciting project however this is cash and aside from needing to put food on the table and decorate the hall I need a new set of springs for the b!!!

I have a 09.30 meeting tomorrow morning to discuss day rates and T's and C's - could be an interesting discussion!!

So how did it go, or is it tomorrow?

Well, not exactly what I wanted - they have offered 2 days a week with a view to increasing to 3 if possible. Day rate is OK (£50 p/d less than I asked for but £125 more than they offered) but 'cos its only 2 days a week its not more than I was earning as a permy...........so I need to try and find 1 or 2 days a week somewhere else.

All things considered not a bad outcome but not ideal, 3 days per week would have done it!

well, you have "gained" more time for the same income as before... that isn't so bad. (y)

It'll be difficult to find some job for the rest of the week, unless you consider part time running the till at Tesco :)

But it leaves you lots of time work on the B, get job-interviews, set up your own company, get a white van and tell the elderly that their roof needs fixing :D

:)

Well, I start back tomorrow for 2 days per week working on a large health related IT contract that has attracted a lot of negative attention in the UK over the past couple of years, not what I want to do but a means to an end..............
