500 (Classic) 500 Restoration

Introduction

Thought some of you may be interested in a restoration that I'm carrying out. Its a 500 Giardiniere (gardeners van) or in the UK its an estate or station wagon if you live in the USA. I have been told (but this is unconfirmed) that there are only 6 left on the road in the UK which makes it a pretty rare thing. I'm not going to bore you with lots of words suffice to say that if the panels I replace are painted they are bought in, everything else is hand made by yours truely.
Hope you enjoy.

Fantastic, I wouldn't have the patience. The initial state of the car reminds me of my old 131 Mirafiori when it was only 6 years old.
Must see it when finished.:worship:

Wow this is really an involved restore job and hats off for the craftsmanship shown!! :worship:

Now I am really concerned about just how much rot I will find in my Giardiniera once I embark upon a restoration which already requires new floorpan and inner/outer sills.....Yikes!!!!

However, it is brilliant to see how the thing comes apart and how it should look in pieces.

Anybody in Glos or Ox or Worcs wanna showcase their skills on my Giard in much the same way as Gazzz??...

I will try and get ordinary 500 pans as I heard these will fit with a little bit of effort and extension but I will have to build my own sils if I go down that road

Any look with the vinal roof and/or where to get one or would I be better tring to work with the one I have? Gavin

Giard right n left floor panels are available, plus vinyl sunroof...Mine has a new roof but also needs similar work to yours...

I've been wondering how the project is going.

It's coming along slowly, I didn't do much at the begining of the year as I've been busy with a couple of other projects but I have made some progress on the fiat recently. I finished the structural work on the drivers side and now I've started on the passenger side, will post up the progress soon.

Ok here is the latest series of photos.

I notice you appear to be using galvanised steel. Any problems mig welding it? I`ve been using zinc plated (Zintec) and thought about galvanised but assumed it wouldn`t weld easily.

Its not the best stuff to weld if I'm honest. Its not good to TIG weld at all as sometimes it will randomly blow holes in it (zinc and lead are the only metals you cannot weld with TIG) so I MIG weld it but you have to watch the fumes as they can make you feel ill a bit like you're coming down with the flu. I'm only using galv because I had loads of it left over from another job, but it does have obvious advantages when restoring classic cars.

Wow what a great post, not sure if it’s inspiring or terrifying

Sorry for not posting sooner, work has been progressing on the 500 although at a slow pace due to other commitments.

Thats all for now but I do have loads more pictures to upload which I'll do soon.

Gazzol,

absolutely brilliant. A love of 500's and the skill and patience to restore one.

Can't wait for your next upload of photos.

As an aside, I have this front panel and an engine lid from a 500F. When you are finished can you make all the bits inbetween for me? I can help with a photo of what it should look like if that helps. :)
