Folks , I've a problem with a 2001 Ducato , in that the MIL light comes on occasionally , the diagnostics says it's the Primary cooling fan. The fan and relay check out ok , it appears the small wire that grounds the relay isn't sending an earth to it , I've checked it back as far as the plug under/near the battery. Where does the wiring go from here? Is there a temp switch other than the 2 on the 'stat housing? Could the switch that's for the ecu stop it working? Even when trying to switch it on via the diagnostics it doesn't work , whereas Fan 2 does.

regards , Tristan.

It's fault P0480 , btw , and the ECU looks ok inside and the 2 plugs are clean.

Is the relay getting it's live feed to it's coil ?
Have you tried putting an Earth wire to the coil with a small fused jumper lead to see if the fan runs ?

I did indeed Andy . The fan(s) have 12v to the motor(s) permanently and the coil has 12v+ to it too , it's the earth that switches the relay , and links an earth to the motor too .

It turned out I had a break in the earth switching relay no.1 , I went in under the dash and found the wires out , and it was fine there , so I replaced the section that was broken from there out . As a result , fan now working and no fault light.

Job jobbed , happy camper again!

cheers , Tristan.:)

Hi! I just joined the forum because of this problem, because I've got the same problem in my 230. The fault light stays on and both fans (1 & 2) are not working. (2001 2,8 JTD with aircond.)

Can you please describe, where I might find that relay no. 1? I have found the relais below the glovebox but which one does the trick?

When I switch on the a/c none of the fans won't run either... but as I recall from other cars, they should do so when the a/c is running (the a/c is good, it has just been checked some month ago and did not produce a fault light)...

Thank you!
