Panda (Classic) 1993 Fiat Panda Fizz "Pandino"

Introduction

Hey everyone, let me introduce you to my first car! :)

The car is a 1993 Fiat Panda Fizz, 999cc engine with fuel injection, only 26,000 miles at the time of buying. Nicknamed "Pandino" by the previous owner, and I'll make sure that name sticks! :D

Pictures are compulsory of course, so I've attached some of my first images that I've taken of the car. You'll likely find various other pictures in this thread when I get some things done to it! I attached the pictures to this post and I've uploaded one to the gallery so that I can have this one embedded!

What have I done already? Well I haven't even had the car for a couple of days yet, but I've done a few things...
  1. Used upholstery cleaner on the dirty ceiling, definitely needs some more though!
  2. Figured out how to do everything (i.e. parcel shelf removal, putting seats down, seat positions, mirrors etc)!
  3. Cleaned all the windows and mirrors!
  4. Checked all fluids and oil levels!
  5. Checked all lights/buttons!
  6. Checked tyre pressures, which I might decrease in the rear as they're running quite high!
  7. Took out the spare wheel/tyre, gave it a good clean but it is showing it's age, though it's been pumped up so it'll get me home if I need it now!
  8. Took the seal/cover off the heater matrix to remove the forest that was growing within it...
  9. Tried taking off the grille but couldn't get one of the centre poppers off and the front screws look a bit rounded off...
  10. Ran the car and moved it on the driveway!
  11. Put a blanket, a bag, a tool extension and a first aid kit in the boot!

*Following list is from original post, read thread for more*
What I plan to do next...
  1. Clean, clean, clean!
  2. Hopefully obtain new badges for the front and rear as all are discoloured!
  3. Try and clean the garage to fit the car in (or more likely at this time, find a suitable car cover for it)!
  4. Seal doors to prevent rust!
  5. Get some touch up paint for areas where paint has come away!
  6. Buy some Fiat Forum stickers of course!
  7. Potentially buy new number plates or at least replace some screws as they're looking a bit worn!
  8. What ever else I end up thinking of... follow the thread and read for more!

I also plan to go to some Panda classic events with others. I'll keep an eye out, but feel free to invite me to something if you've got something/see something going on!

That's about all I can think of right now! It feels so strange having a car, I'm very happy to have bought a car I really wanted. I've been looking for ages. :worship: If you have any questions about it then please do ask! I'm very happy to talk about my car! (y)
Fair enough then - you say a one off job, but is it more of an annual or bi-annual job to use a waxoyl type product though?

I looked up Dinitrol and Bilt Hamber products and they are praised but there's so many different product types. I don't know which ones I'd go for, perhaps one for cavities and one for underbody (though I have been using Hammerite Waxoyl for both technically).

I could buy another aerosol Waxoyl easily, but by the sounds of it you wouldn't recommend Waxoyl too highly! Any reason for that which I should avoid it for?

If you want to use Dinitrol then use 3125 for cavities and 4941 for underbody. I've not used Bilt Hamber myself so can't really advise on what they have.

If Dinitrol is properly applied then it should last a number of years, with perhaps only needing checking and possibly localised touch ups every year. It certainly won't need a complete reapplication every year.

Waxoyl tries to be both a cavity and an under body wax at the same time, however in my opinion it is too thick to work effectively in cavities, and it is not tough enough to work well as an underbody wax.

When used on the underbody it just tends to get washed away by road spray very quickly, it also stays sticky which means dirt sticks to it and also if you ever have to go underneath the car you end up covered in it too. Dinitrol 4941 on the other hand dries to a hard finish, meaning dirt can be washed off, you don't get covered in it and it is much more resilient to being washed off.

If you saw the 3125 cavity wax you would instantly see why it works so much better than waxoyl, it is incredibly thin so it can creep into spot welded seams.

A kit like this would be good for a Panda:

Might seem a lot of money, but its cheaper than welding!

FDNY21: a nice, tidy Panda you have there. :) On the 1st pictures on the start of the thread, I couldn't help but notice just how little Fiat changed the appearance of the FIRE engine over the years: your 999cc looks almost identical to my 1368cc, lol!

Cheers for all the info there! Well that makes a pretty good argument for it, I will consider getting some of it next year - I might not buy that kit with lots of them in but I may buy a few separately to try both the cavity and underbody ones out.

Lots of good points there on the thinner and drying ones from the manufacturer too so thanks for all that!

Thank you, Puntofan! The 750, 999 and 1368 all probably look almost the same, only thing Fiat needed to do was change some sizes and colours and hey presto, it works (y)

Waxoyl is fine if diluted 20% white spirt then sprayed on with compressor as a cavity wax it's viscosity improves when kept in hot water before application , in fact it will run in to all areas penetrating seams

Pandino's plates are still attached to the car (y) Smooth running recently (bar the radio which is still dead), still got some Sisley bits that I can sort out for the car though. Here's a pic of my Panda with a college lecturer's Dolomite in the car park

For the eagle-eyes among you, yes that's a smiley face sticker under the Abarth badge, a college student on my course decided it would be nice for all the cars on the course to have one :p

The Pioneer radio I've got is receiving signal to the little connectors at the back of the metal box so it suggests either the metal box/head unit is broken or is there a fuse in either of those that can be replaced? Still peed off as it isn't a cheap radio to replace :bang:

i may have a sticker obsession, but i have to say if someone stuck one on my car, even worse on the paint, i'd totally lose my temper bad style - not cool at all!

Loving the Dolly, nearly bought one a few times actually.
Sticker came off with no issues so no harm done :) Dollys are pretty nice, I was looking at one among the many other cars as a first car... Panda wins (y)

In other news, I NOW HAVE RADIO! :D

The Pioneer DAB radio I had originally was playing up, so after grabbing some Pioneer radio removal tools from Halfords we managed to check the signals to the rear of the box (a week or two ago), and sure enough there was signal there but the radio still wouldn't turn on with ignition.

So today, I pulled the radio out again. This time, I played with the connections. Pushing them all in as far as they can go, what ever I could do with out removing anything. I put it all back together and put the head unit back on, turned on the ignition, and suspected nothing to happen.

Wrong! It turned on after a few seconds. It did reset itself so I can tell that there were problems but my assumption is it was a contact/connection issue. It did an update after that and started playing music straight after. Sweet, now to get more music on my phone to make use of that USB slot again :slayer:

Can't believe it was such a simple fix in the end, but I'm glad I didn't have to spend a load of money on another DAB radio :worship:

Tyre pressures checked and some more air put in using my new compact pump. Cheers to the parents for getting that for Christmas (y)

Got around to putting on my Limited Editions Unlimited stickers. Here you go, I'm repping for you now VmanC :D

White ones went either side, and seeing as how I had the silver ones I put one on the back as well :)

After building some bikes for my next door neighbour, the postwoman dropped off these handy red clips from Partsworld UK. Finally, I can put my Sisley passenger pocket to good use! I put the clips in as soon as I got them...

I had to give the pocket a good scrub clean, it's still not perfect but it's as good as I can get it and it will do what it needs to do - here it is:

The girlfriend is happy that she has a pocket as well now (y)

Christmas is coming soon. It's going to be a busy time with Pandino, lots of things still to do! :D

So that's where you can get the plastic "Rawlplugs" for door pockets.? I've done the same and got hold of a passenger side pocket but not yet fitted it due to not having these, not much point in reusing old ones as they're chewed up in trying to get them out.

Just don't get me any more work!
It's alright, I can help you out with it when I get to the workshop (y)

You could get them from their eBay store but it looks like they're out of stock right now, I couldn't find them when searching for them just now  Hopefully they get some more in. The Sisley I took the pocket off wouldn't let me have its plugs. Once those things are in, they will never come out right again! :p

They will, once you squeeze them from the other side.
Yes, grips from the inside of the door so if you can squeeze those bits down then they should pull right out, but it's probably not the easiest of things to access. :p

I take it the only way to do that is to take off the outer door skin? If you needed to take them out for painting the door etc then you may be taking that off to deal with rust anyway but I just had black plugs in my door before. Black plugs come out just from pulling from the outside, these red plugs have a bigger area for gripping though, which is why I couldn't take it out the Sisley - they were only a couple quid for a new set anyway at Partsworld. :)

Does anyone know the correct name for these plastic screw plugs? I've had a search on eBay under a few different names but can't get anything like them.

Thanks FDNY21 for looking(y), I checked Partsworld's website but had no luck either. I got a new rear axle off them and it was only shown on their eBay shop and not their own website.

I know when I searched for a plastic stud for fitting to the centre of the roof/head lining it was a called a "fir tree" obviously as it looks like a fir tree but I never would have known that.

Hi Pandani, here is the link to the pocket that Partsworld sell: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fiat-Mk2-...:Panda&hash=item35d86f03df:g:iFsAAOSwBadTpWgg

In the description of this, they mention that the fixings are available in the eBay Shop as well. It looks like they used as that's where I got mine but they may have just had the listing run out or ran out of stock temporarily. If you can, I'd send them an email or contact them via eBay to ask if they can put some more up.

The ad for that pocket also shows an exploded view of the pocket and components. Numbers 4, 5 and 6 are the pocket and the screws, but just to the left and behind the pocket you can see another fixing which is meant to resemble the plugs. Unfortunately no number on it so can't tell you what it is. The plugs were a gift so I didn't buy them with my account and can't view the old listing, but if you need me to try and get the old listing then I'll ask my father to grab it. I'd see if you can contact them first though, they may still have some! Hopefully!

[/QUOTE]Thanks FDNY21 for all your help.
I got my door pocket from a scrap yard on eBay somewhere in England along with a load of other stuff that I knew I'd need, I didn't know that you could still buy them new.:bang: I got a good few things from Italy on eBay and it's surprising what's still available new for the classic Panda in mainland Europe and even England, but unfortunately there's virtually nothing here in Ireland unless someone else knows different.:(

Are you after these screws?
IMG_1484003940.339726.jpg

Are you after these screws?
No. The things I'm after are the red plastic square shaped pieces that are pushed into the bodywork holes, this allows a normal steel screw to then be screwed into place. They're used for the door pockets, the ''Jesus!'' handles, rear light clusters etc. I can only describe them as a Rawlplug for car trim.
