I was wondering how high people rev their 100HP's. I know some rev it to 7000rpm, but the red line is actually at 6500rpm. I always thought that you start doing damage when you go into the red (I've just looked on wikipedia and that seems to agree with me)?

At the moment I am running my one in, and at 2000 miles I am aiming for 6000rpm (when fully warmed up). By the time I reach 3000 miles I will be aiming higher, but I'm not sure how high I should go. For running it in, is it best to go to 7000rpm, or just 6500rpm?

In most cars the last few hundred rpm are gutless. Is this the case with the 100HP or is the last 500rpm really worth using?

um in the lower gears like 1st n 2nd revs very fast to red line but the high gears its slower so not point it is best and faster to change 6.5 or 6 but not goin to hurt it to take it to the limiter every so often, but most cars are different mines been ran i hard n fast other poo-dled so they wont be as fast

I believe the rev limiter is positioned to prevent damage to the engine and going briefly into the red zone won't cause any damage ... of course holding it there for long periods won't do it any good.

Using 90% of the available rev range was the recommendation of a police instructor who said that figure ties up with peak power. Unfortunately, the Panda doesn't seem to tail off after peak power so it's not always easy to feel where peak power falls imho.

As for running in ... well you probably don't want to hear my views :ROFLMAO:

I sometimes hit into the red - although I have induction and what I believe to be a nice exhaust on; a few times I have looked down and seen it on the 7k mark

According to the Fiat website, it's happy at 7,000 revs. Years ago when they could afford two different colours on the backgrounds many cars had an orange and a red sector on the rev counter. My guess is 6500-7000 would be orange.

You'll find if it isn't fully warmed up it limits at 6,500.

I often took my 1.2 4x4 to the rev limiter which was always a bit embarrassing as I was trying to overtake at the time. Didn't seem to do any damage to the engine but could have done a lot of damage to the car and me!

The rev limiter is there for a reason. It has been factory set at around 7000rpm to prevent engine damage. This is always based on worse case... towing..climbing hills, fully loaded etc etc. Im sure modifing the ecu would allow you to rev to 7250, without problems if it was there short term.

Ramble, Ramble..

My point is reving to 7000rpm is perfectly fine, bouncing off the limiter now and again is no biggy.

I hit the rev limiter in 5th every year on the autobahn in my track car, which can be a little scary as it takes a while to climb from 6500-7000rpm in 5th!

Take mine up to 7,000 or thereabouts regularly - sweet as a nut - fun in third. Just an aside - can the software keep a record of the maximum revs you've used so that Fiat could be funny about warranties if it's been over-revved? Or am I paranoid?

I think it can.

The only reason I say this is because on the Abarth 500, Fiat will not modify teh car to EsseEsse spec if it has been on the limiter a certain number of times AFAIK.

If they are anything like VAG they'll record when "maximum engine revs" have been exceeded and VAG will void warranty for that. However, my understanding is that max engine revs is the other side of the limiter....

Thanks for the replies. I think I will go up to 7000rpm when running it in, but I'll probably add the last 500rpm gradually, maybe over 1000miles.

Sounds fair enough - I'm sure it's much more important to warm the engine up then to keep it spinning over and not labouring than to worry about over-revving.

You can hit the limiter now you have done 2000miles. I did it by the time i'd done 400. A rev limiter prevents damage to the engine so anything up to the limiter is fine. You'd only potentially damage the engine if you really buzzed the engine by putting it in too low a gear at high revs. I know for example that my partner has seen over 9000rpm out of the integra by doing this (i did tell him off), but the engine is still fine. I have hit the rev limiter in both our cars a number of times.

For running it in take it to 7000rpm. You can go to 7100rpm but obviously the limiter kicks in. I agree that there is not much (if anything) to be had power wise by revving to 7000rpm over say 6500rpm as power drops off anyway. Only reason really is if you need to hold the gear exiting a corner. I tend to change up somewhere around 6700rpm or so (I do like to rev an engine though).
