The Haynes manual refers to this tool which holds the cam followers in place when removing the cylinder head extension. You lift the extension slightly and then slot these into place.

They suggest making them from thin metal angle. I can make these but need to source some suitable angle. Does anyone know where I might get some please? I'm guessing thin plastic might work equally well.

To save time in making them I would be happy to buy some if they weren't expensive - but I can't find any. I'm sure it's going to take me two or three hours to make them as the measurements are quite precise.

I'm also wondering if they are really needed or if I can carefully remove the head extension without these tools.

I think I've found what I need from Pennine Metals on eBay. 40mm x 40mm mild steel angle, 1.2mm thickness. £13.70 for a metre.

That should be nice and easy to cut and will keep me occupied for a while! It's lucky I'm retired.

I'd look at it first, if the heads beyond repair you'll be wasting your time and money as it's not needed to replace a head, piston or engine
I was just thinking that the head might be salvageable and it would be good if all the cam followers didn't fall out.
