1.8 Cambelt Service Advice Required

I'm require for some advice from the forum regarding servicing my Fiat Stilo 1.8 ('02).
My car has been regularly serviced for the past six years (normally at the 12k periods). Over the last twelve months I've completed about 7,000 miles and now my mileage is up to 62K.
I phoned the local (Liverpool area) Fiat dealerships and they advised that I'm due for my "6 Year / 72K Service" which involves replacing the cambelt. The cost of this is around £650.

Would those who have/had the Stilo 1.8 be able to advise whether I should take this service now (as my car is 6 years old) or wait until next year (when I will be closers to 72K)?
Does the Stilo 1.8 ('02) suffer cambelt problems?

Thanks

Toejam

re: 1.8 Cambelt Service Advice Required

Hello,
I had my cambelt changed last year, I was under the impression that it was either 5 years or 72000 miles, which ever one comes first. Mine has only got 52000 miles on an '02' plate. I would consider getting it changed now as the damage caused if a cam belt goes can be very expensive. I would also get a few quotes as the prices do vary (I had mine changed at a main dealer but only because I got a good discount when I bought the car)
Regards
Natty

re: 1.8 Cambelt Service Advice Required

the cambelt should be changed around every 5 years no matter the mileage or every 72k miles! My car is coming upto 5years in september (53 plate) and has done 50k miles so far. Ive been and got a quote from the fiat garage for the cambelt change and the receptionist women quoted me £360, but when i spoke to the parts manager got a better price under the fiat care plan they do now. £650 does seem excessive? My total quote came to £535 but this was also for a variator and change of the variator along with the cambelt service. Personally mate, they're well and truely ripping you off and id try and find another dealer local to you. Also once i'd got my price of 535, ive shopped around and found i can get the parts alone for nearly 100 cheaper, i will be going back to the garage to neogiate some more! Good luck and let us know how it goes? You thought about trying and independant garages usually alot cheaper? only reason i havent gone to an independant is due to the variator being changed and it requiring special tools..

re: 1.8 Cambelt Service Advice Required

I've just bought my Abarth and it's done 40k miles and is a 2002... I got the cambelt done straight away. It's either 5 years or 72k miles, whichever comes the soonest. It's just not worth messing around and taking the risk on destroying your engine... it can happen at any time, whether you're ragging it or at idle. It's only a piece of rubber... :D

cambelt change for the 1.8 under fiat care is £150. just quote fiat care when you go about booking it (y)

Thanks for the heads up.
I'll ask about the "Fiat Care" bit but I haven't heard about this before so not entirely sure what it is.

I thought the £650 was high. I haven't investigated a non FIat dealer at present as I wanted to keep all the Fiat stamps in my service book up to date. If anyone can recommend a good place to get the work done (in the Liverpool area) that would be great.

Thanks again.

That will be belt only. You really need a new tesioner and water pump to be sure you wont have any problems.

Yup, Yup, thats what my local dealer workshop manager told me (no water pump though, mine a jtd115).
I got it done at £250 with the broze service and a loan car.
Dont listen to the woman over the phone (sorry, but that was a woman I spoke to at start.) talk to the workshop manager, he gave me 15% discount. ;)

£200,and he should be using about £150 worth of parts and it takes a few hours to do. Something is not right there.

The belt and tensioners origanal parts can be bought fro ggb in Bradford for around £80 as opposed to £140 from FIAT. Fitting is about £70 at a local specialist. My dad had his car serviced and cambelt change and it came to about £230 as oppossed to the rediculess ammount FIAT wanted to charge. Around £540 for the same work.

Got my Abarth back today after a cambelt kit change total bill £181, over the moon , this is a local respected garage that has looked after all my cars, £70 labour the rest the Kit. If anyone wants details the garage is near Glasgow Airport.

re: 1.8 Cambelt Service Advice Required

I have just had my cam belt replaced on my 03 Stilo Multiwagon JTD 115. The car has only done 46000 miles. However, due to the early demise of other parts, namely front springs, rear hub bearing, rear suspension frame bushes, etc. I decided it would be a good idea to do the cam belt change early. The alternative being very expensive. I have found a reliable Fiat mechanic in the local area.(nr Fareham), the cost was £215. He said the other parts associated with the belt were in good condition and did not require replacement.

Nope - nothing wrong - The guys just a very fair bloke who genuinely loves Italian cars.....Ask anyone on the Coupe forum....forum.fiatcoupe.net....
Pay more elsewhere if u want but you'll be giving money away......I'd use over a Fiat dealer anyday...........
Anyone who vaselines your battery terminals without asking during a routine service - you know you can trust :slayer:

No :shakehead: - it's the full kit with tensioner (comes with the kit).

It's true that AUX belt & Water pump aren't included though (pigs don't fly either
)

Cracking good value when you consider the jobs being done by a main dealer.

Get them to do the waterpump too. It will cost you a little more, but save you a lot later on when the water pump fails (The impellar usually falls off the inside of JTD water pumps) and the whole lot has to be redone again.

re: 1.8 Cambelt Service Advice Required

give Forward Autos a call in St Helens. They done all my work and have been the cheapest for my area and its not too far away from Liverpool.

Forward Autos were one of the ones I contacted. They seem to be the cheapest Fiat dealer in the area (although there are only three).
To get the full cambelt service, MOT and replacement of headlight (offside) and fog light (driverside) they advised that they would do it for £700.

If anyone knows a reliable independant garage that they have used before (in the Liverpool area) who can service my Stilo I would apppecaite the advice.

Thanks
