Yep, cables themselves usually have no problem but their ends connectors and/or fixings does ...
With engine running, clutch disengaged (pedal down) and park brake ON, have a look (better be 2 persons) HOW the levers works at the GB when your helper engage the gears sequentially: one cable will select the group, 1-2, 3-4 or 5-R, the other cable will engage the 1-3-5 or 2-4-R. Once the GB is in 5th gear, try to push further (by hand) the corresponding actuator in the same direction it came from 4th, if you can do that, the cable has probably too much slag. Gently engage the clutch: the gear should 'stay in' and the engine stall... If that works like this, you'll have to figure out where the excessive play comes from and fix it !
