Right, this may be my first 'real' mod to any car I have ever owned! Thinkng of getting a full stainless exhaust (powerflow) fitted to my stilo to improve sound and tail pipe styling!!! (very poor at present)
Anyway just wondering how much I can expect my insurance premiuim to jump up and whether I should declare it at all, just trying to get a feel of wht you guys do/did!!!

Thanks

I wouldn't bother declaring it unless it has a proven performance increase. (y) Oh & painted calipers don't have to be declared either as you haven't changed the standard specification of the brakes. ;)

well how would you argue that point on decals?no change to the paint but still should be declared.
nothing to do with a performance increase of the car it deviates from standard. whether that be a bit of paint or a full exhaust.i remeber years ago reading of a theft claim being rejected as the car had a go faster stripe.
if the worst happens you dont want any hasstle over rejected or reduced claims

I wouldn't declare it. It doesn't matter what's painted all you're doing is giving the insurance company an excuse to rip you off more! As painted calipers are'nt a performance mod & so long as you haven't actually changed the standard specs of the caliper then they wouldn't have a leg to stand on in the event of a claim.

Problem is, if you don't declare it your insurance will wiggle out of any claim that you make. I have a powerflow backbox and tailpipe and I had to declare mine on my old insurance and they charged something stupid like £60 iirc.

But my new insurers just took the whole car into account, including mods and my mods are covered for 2 grand. ATM :)

also were your alloys and spoiler standard fit or add ons?if adds on they should be declared.technically even your painted calipers

Just added the spoiler!! won't bother declaring that!! everying else standard! Dont get the calipers though!!! have to agree with Ben R on that one! seems a bit harsh to up your premiuim just cos you've painted the calipers!

Suppose I will have to ask insurance company before I buy!!! will enquire tomorrow!

Cheers!!! A friends had a powerflow put on his MG ZR and it look and sounds good! Dont really know much about exhaust mods. Will I have to specify a specific exhaust for a specific sound??
I know i will have to select a tailpipe, will probably have a twin pipe as I've seen a few on the forum that look great!!!
Sorry for my ignorance but when you say Mark do you me KoArAng????

Thanks

Yeah sorry! I have a supersprint system which is the muts nuts! (y) I think it's supposed to give me 8bhp & it's a cat back system i.e centre section & backbox.

Yep i'm the Mark in question :)
When I had my powerflow fitted, they said the sound was determined more by the backbox than the tailpipe. The smaller the box the bigger the sound as far as mine was concerned anyway.

Cheers for your replys they've been a big help! Im going to get a cat back system too! (still toying with idea) I dont fancy anything too loud!!! its only a 1.6 so don't want anthing that will make it sound what it can't do!

have toyed with getting an Abarth but really love my car at present and will lose too much money! so will just spend a little on this one! anyway back to exhausts!

KoArAng you say the smaller gave the loudest noise! I always thought the bigger the louder like these chavs have on their Novas, they always look huge? anyway can you tell me what size back box you went for?

PM Mike Norton he's got the same engine as you, he'll be able to give you some links for the place that done his. (y)

Basically Shminkypinky, the bigger the backbox the more noise insulation they have. So the smaller the louder. Mine is a lot smaller than the original Abarth one but it was well soundproofed for a small box so mine did not go much louder, it just enhance what was already there.

Im am only going on my experience with powerflow here though. I suppose there are quite a few people who have bigger boxes and have a louder sound, it's all gonna depend on the box itself.

Here's the Powerflow website maybe it will give some clues there. If you don't find out, I'm gonna be going into the powerflow fitters this week to sort out my new exhaust, I have to choose my pipes etc, so I'll ask them if you like.

Cheers KoArAng really appreciate it.
Im going to give powerflow (Mr Tyre) a ring today so I will ask. But if you don't mind asking at the place you go to that would be great too!

Thanks again for all your help.

When I got my powerflow fitted they took out both boxes and fitted the biggest back box they had. They said if it was too loud that they could fit another box for me.

Never quite got round to it. ;)

On the insurance front you should declare every non standard component. They do not charge you for everything, e.g. my drilled and grooved discs were free, but if they find a non declared mod then they will count your insurance as void.

This does not just mean you have to pay out for your damage, it means that you have to pay out for third party damage and you are leaving yourself open to civil claims for any injuries caused. Millions in the case of putting someone in a wheelchair. The police may also decide to prosecute for driving without insurance and to top it off you will never get insured again at a reasonable price. You don't need to have an accident to be caught either, all it needs is a bored pc to stop you and give you a producer, (a mate of mine is on the cars and he says they quite often stop modded cars because they know 50% of them will not be properly insured). IMO its not worth the risk.

Taggin on the end of this, i know it's not possible to "Angel Tune" the 1.6's but are there any other recommended performance mods, i want a little more oomph from my motor, and beyond the airfilter, and a new exhaust i'm pretty stumped. btw, my gf's 1.4 MG ZR has more pull than my active sport :(
