Hi guys,

After 6 months of gear free problems, the pump has gone:mad:

The problem I have is that the car is stuck in 2nd gear so it wont start and being in 2nd i cant move it from where it is to get it towed to a garage.

Is there a way to put it into neutral?
Ive seen on some of the alfas with selespeed gearboxes that somewhere near the back of the actuator there is a hex-plug that can be turned putting it into neutral, but on the stilo it doesnt seem to have this???

*bump*

Also does anyone know where the pump is located, cant seem to find it

Na, can't be done, when it's stuck, it's stuck! Only way to move it when it's decided to lock up is to jack it up and pull one drive shaft, that'll let the diff turn freely, otherwise the recovery crew will happily drag it onto a low loader. Sometimes, with a fully charged battery you will get the occasional glimmer of pump action! Give it a try after a battery charge. If the pump is totally shot, it's about £400 to replace from an indie. Alfa dealers can do the job, and they're cheaper. Indies will need to be experienced as the system needs careful calibration after instalation!

Thanks very much for the help Andy (y)

I have just checked the battery and the voltage is low so hopefully a fully charged battery might give the pump a little bit of life to get back into to neutral.

Im guessing you need the Examiner to recalibrate the pump after changing it?

Spot on, the calibration is part automatic and part manual. The selespeed system can re-calibrate itself internally by slotting each gear in and out a few times to re-learn values. Its the clutch push rod adjustment that needs examiner and a spanner! The push rod has to be adjusted very accurately or you end up with very lumpy take up of power and lots of kangaroo action off the line.

The job can be done by Fiat, but again, Alfa dealers and specialists have much more experience with the selespeed system. My only experience of a selespeed failure is from my days of 156 Sele ownership, and Northants Alfa did mine in a day for about £450 inc. new pump, relay and labour. Prices are probably higher now as that was in 2005 I think.

I'd suggest avoiding a secondhand unit as they seem to be good for about 100,000miles maximum. So many from secondhand places will have done lots of that already!

Good luck.

PS. If you are offered the option, have the selespeed pump relay replaced too, it is a known trouble spot and can lead to low pump output which can damage the pump and cause system failure. Its a low cost piece of kit and usally changed as a matter of course by reputable and knowledgeable garages.

Again all are Alfa threads, but interesting reading.

Alfaowner is a fab resource for Selespeed info and fixes, its the same system in Stilo, 156 and 147. If the problem hasn't been listed there or here, I'd be really surprised!

Have fun:)

...........So, I took a thin long pole and started smacking the s*** out of the pump for about 15 seconds as soon as it made a noise I dived into the car turned the key and it started:slayer:

Just called the stealer and.............£460 just for the pump:eek: The pump for the alfa selespeed system is half the price of that(n)

Never looked at that. I think the whole assembly is a hydraulic piston acting directly on the clutch assembly.

Well the system is similar in theiory to that on Dual logic Panda's, and if so it should be do-able.

Can someone post the part number of the Selespeed Resiviour and a Diagram or even a pic from someones abarth if they could please.

Jon.

I thought it would be a interchangeable part but not according to the stealer but i reckon you could recondition the pump with the parts from the alfa one.

The first picture is the pump, for anyone that ever needs to find it so they can smack a bit of life into it if they ever get into a situation like me( its the brownish colour nipple looking thing:p right at the back below the fuel injector)

The last two pictures are of the reservoir tank for the selepeed system, is this what wanted Jon?
