Better to change it too early than too late! it certainly would be worth changing it.

Its a 16v. I managed to dig out my service book and its says that time belt is changed at 5 years or 72,000 miles ???

Now im confused into what i shoud do as youve said it should have been done at 40,000 miles

edit: Just spoke to Fiat as was worrying that i should have had it down and they've assured me it 5years or 72,000 miles.

Thnaks for the help

16v with 50k your driven a time bomb mate get it fixed as soon as possible or you will be left with no engine.. What dave is saying there known to go before 50k and its better safe than sorry as the 16v is not the safe engine and will damage... (n)

what fiat are saying:-

Sure it'll be fine, leave it till 72k thats when the computer says it should be done. (puts down phone) MU HA HA HA!!! FOOLS, little do they know their belt will snap and THEN I can bill them for a WHOLE new engine, MU HA HA HA (evil fiat dealer laugh).

what dave is saying:-

well, err speaking from experiance, its genernal knowledge that you should change it at 40k to avoid the wrath of the evil fiat dealer, mkay;)

dont listen to that girl on the desk, 100s of people have has them go at just over 40k miles, get it done now. do a seaech of the forum you will find threads by the people who left it too late

HAHAHAHAHA!! yeh my mate left it too late but his was a safe engine luckily!!! but even though it is a safe engine it was more hassle than what it should've been so just do it now for under a tenner if you do it yourself!!!

My car will be 4 next march and has done 25000 miles. going to get my belt changed After new year to be safe. A cam belt kit is cheaper than a new engine. Getting timing belt done at the same time car is having a service will work out cheaper, trust me.

I see what your saying, but surley FIAT must do something if there saying and printing 72,000 miles?

Anywayz im gona get mine sorted asap as id rather be safe then sorry.

A quick question: How easy is it to get to the cam to have a look at wear etc and would i be able to fit it myself with the aid of instructions ??? Ive heard that they aint that bad todo, Is there any instructions on here or could some post up some for me please. This would be very helpful.

I have a MK2 1.2 Punto Sporting 02 plate

Many thanks to all your replys and help so far.

Could fit it yourself with instructions in the haynes manual also i think you need to support the engine from underneath using a jack as the RH engine mount needs to be removed which is a bit of a pain.. But to be honest i wouldint touch an none safe engine for my first try abit dodgy i would think and remember as i dont think anyones said it also replace tensioner when replaceing belt...

To check it all you have to do is remove the case - you don't even have to take it off all the way just pull the cover partly off. The cover is the hardest part to get off and back on compared to changing the belt, lol. Just get a haynes manual or you could prob just find good instructions off the internet - i would recommend taking some photos of where things are alligned before you take everything off just so if things do mess up you can have a look back at how it was. All you've got to make sure when changing a belt is that you put everything back how it was and you even get brief instructions on the box the new belt came it to show where pulleys should allign to

but yeh if you're not sure i would be very careful with an unsafe engine!!

Thanks for the replys (y)
I think im gona have a look at it my self as i wont be able get it done till just after the New Year. Then get a garage to fit them for me to safe any problems lol.

Does it do anything to the engine taking the top off and on again? I take its afew simple bolts holding the lid of it on? Havent realy paid much attention to it before, but will have a look at it 2moro.

Cheers

60k mile belt change, 1k after fitting reset for life of belt. then thats it till next change.
