I have a 2000 Mk 2 Punto with the 1.2, 8V engine. Because the original had so many miles on it (160,000) and the head gasket was blown and the clutch was ready to to go. I replaced the engine with a newer motor (2003/4 I believe) The swap was pretty straight forward and not that difficult. However I am faced with a problem. The engine when you start it up purrs like a kitten and sounds good. But usually after about 20 minutes a problem surfaces. The engine at normal operating temperature will suddenly die and will not restart until the engine cools down. For the most part I have replace most of the sensors, replaced the thermostat plugs filter. But I have not been able to rectify the problem. I have also checked all the connections. I did manage to get the car to a local company the specializes on ECU’s but he could not find a fault, and not stored fault codes were stored. I would like to take it into Fiat but the vehicle is not taxed or insured. The only problem with taking it to the local dealer is that some of my friends have used them in the past and have been fleeced by them.

Can anyone help me out here?

Do you know if the ECU has a safegaurd type feature that will shut the engine down
(fuel cutoff, electrical cutoff etc).

Thanks
Greg

had this problem on a mk 1 1.2 16v sporting, and was down to the sensors on the throttle body . ??? Dnt no if this will help

Come to think of it, the throttle body sensors (two) is the one thing I have not tried replacing, although I have cleaned and check their connections. I have the old throttle body from my other engine so I will swap them out.

Man this thing is really driving me crazy.:bang:

Thanks again gents, hopefully I will have swapped them out by the weekend, I will keep you posted.

Thanks
Greg

Well I managed to swap the throttle body out and the car started right up. But after 20 minutes it shut down:cry:

Any other ideas before a take sledge hammer to it.?

Im sure there was a post about this before or im thinking of a friends car.I seem to think it was something to do with the fuel line and pump and debris or something dispersing when the car got to normal operating temp and blocking something or other. Sorry i cant help but im positive this has happened before.

yup you're right fiat dealers are 85% :spam: (large tin of...)

most smaller garages will have a basic fault code reading machine that will figure it out, although I think on mk'2s you get a flashy red light ON the ecu that blips a certain number of times, and that IS the fault code readout

are you sure you got the engine from a same model, cos I know with mk1's some have engine temp sensors and others have overheat switchs (S models get a 'too late its overheated' light, SX and above get a proper gauge and sender, detailed by a red bottomed temp sender, S models are White or black bottomed).

AS I know with mine I changed the speedo pod to an SX model and when the engine got *yay* hot the gauge would jump up to well off the top of the gauge. installed a proper temp sender and got a working gauge:D

might be worht a try getting a white bottomed or red bottomed sender, although AFAIK these senders only go to the dials so doesn't effect ecu:confused:

is there a throttle position sensor? if so did you swap that aswell or put old one in new throttle thingy.

Swapped the complete throttle body over. It had two conectors on it, but there was no way of removing them from the throttle body.

This could be a possibility, as when the car shuts down and does not restart, the ECU dash light is not illuminated. Perhaps it is not the ECU after all.
