It sounds like that the ticking comes from the top of the engine - It also did tick a bit before but not this much

Oh, so noisy that it can be heard inside the car with closed doors and windows while driving? :)

Can tappets ever be that bad? I suppose if the timing was so far out you were smashing the valves with the pistons you would notice the loss of power. :)

Oh, didn't thought that the valves could been smashed on a 8v

I was driving last night though, where the ticking or what it is, seemed to quite down a bit after a good 1 hour ride.

The car drives even better now, full power and no problem what so ever taking revs :slayer:

Maybe I'm just paranoid about my car...

Yes sorry. no valve interference on an 8V.

Perhaps you had some oil starvation after your head change. So fingers crossed it is ok now.

Hi guys....!

I'm in trouble again :bang:

After driving a few 100 km, my car making me sleepless again.
Since the HG change, it ticks A lot and it now blows exhaust gas though the oil fill cap.

I have been searching the world wide web... for a solution but no luck... so now I seeking guidance from you guys one more time... :worship:

Ticking could be a sign the shims need adjusting but I dowt that

High oil cap blowong is either blocked breather (cam cover or pipe)
Or low compression causing excessive blowby

1. Check you have a vacuum at the breather hose on the rocker cover at the top of the engine. A bit of smoke is not a big deal on an old engine.

2. Use a long handled screwdriver to locate the sound of that tapping down to within a few inches of where it is coming from by putting the handle on your ear as you place the blade here and there on the engine. Just be careful you do not place it on a moving part!

3. Confirm you can see oil being splashed around inside the rocker (top) cover and if necessary take it off and make sure you can see oil visibly splashing the surroundings of the engine.

4. With the top cover off zero in on the source of that noise if you could not find it earlier.

With a screwdriver you should be able to locate that noise very precisely if the sound is coming from the valve gear.

I might try that, if I decide to put my engine back in my car...

Is there a easy way to decide whether that have happend or not, without have to take the head off?
Can I check oilchannel another way?

Even with the engine out you can turn it over with the starter. So if get it upright with some oil in it it should be possible to see you have oil flowing with the rocker cover off.

If you take the plugs out it will spin faster too.

The head gasket has a rectangular tab approx 10x20 mm that sticks out. When it's on the right way the tab sticks out near the dipstick.

Thanks guys - Now I just can't wait to get home, to see whether I had ten thumbs when I put it on... :bang:

DOH, doh, doh, doh! :bang:

The HG was indeed turned 180 degres the wrong way... Feel some so so so embarrassed. My father-in-law (Old mechanic, but never worked on Fiat) and me self were 110 % confident that we put it on the right way that night - We followed Haynes, Alto was on top but yeah never feel that confident...

The camshaft looks a bit dry but we hope that it didn't take too much damage of our little shunt... :yuck:

In my opion, it also explains the ticking... :bang:

I wonder if you can clear that oil way with a fine screwdriver?

Oh didn't thought of that, but just pulled the block and the head apart yesterday, buying a new HG and replacing it this weekeend - Hopefully it works like a charm with HG fitted the right way :D

Fingers crossed, although it did not work for you last time I said that about an oil problem

If it was me I would start it without the cover on and watch the oil spray around a bit before I could believe it was now getting oil.
