I've just stumbled across this forum after searching for help with my Punto's overheating problem.

I'd be so grateful if someone could shed some light on the problem :)

I have a Fiat Punto 60S (1998). It's done 30,000 miles. Recently, the engine has been overheating after it's been driving for around 20 minutes. It doesn't seem to make any difference if the car is moving or stationary.

The radiator doesn't appear to be losing water and even if it's filled with water before leaving, the same problem happens (there aren't any air bubbles in the system).

Has anyone had a similar problem or is anyone able to shed any light? I can't face another garage bill right now (only just had a new exhaust!).

Thanks very, very much.

Love Rachael

I should also add that since the problem's started, the heater hasn't been working (suggesting a radiator problem?) and the cooling fan DOES seem to be working.

Thanks again!

Love Rachael

P.S. Please don't tell me it's the head gasket!

Hi Rachael :) ,
I should think it unlikely to be the head gasket at this early stage.
[?] 1. Is there any sign of oil in the radiator water ?
[?] 2. Is there any sign of water (mayonaise) in the oil filler cap ?
If neither of these are obvious, I would suggest a trip to the local garage as I suspect its the thermostat.
My Mk1 Punto 75SX did similar thing a while after I bought the car (not new).
Turned out to be a sticky thermostat in mine.

Good Luck Rachael.

Neil,

Thanks so much for your reply. :)

Unfortunately, it seems that there is water in the oil filler cap, so I guess that means head gasket :( I can't believe it can happen after so few miles.

I've also phoned a garage and they suspect head gasket too :(

Thanks again for the reply.

Love Rachael
