 When it went tight you should of took it to dealer, anyway I'd go for new hub & be done with it.Good extraction tools (snap on/mac tools) are very (VERY) expensive & not worth buying for a one off job.
Swallow your pride & get dealer to renew hub.......saying it was your mate that broke it of course ;)

 Now I take it the hub bolt thread is knackered?

The thread on the hub seems OK, it was the bolt thread itself that seemed damaged, I've not got another bolt yet but I'm looking to screw it in gently back & forth, i.e. as soon as it tightens loosen it then tighten again then loosen etc etc until it is completely in the hole like the other three.

my partners car(corsa b) only has 3 bolts holding her wheel on as ones snapped,it didnt fail mot, im thinking as the mot er didnt take the wheel trim off. my punto has just failed its mot, amoungst other things on a snapped front wheel bolt (ali wheel) at the same mot station just 3 months later. i tried to drill it out but snapped quit a few drill bits, if you try to drill it out invest in some good drill bits, i have been to a local garage and been quoted £25,im thinking to just glue a bolt head to the sheered off end to get it through

Just a word to those driving with three bolts - remember that your wheel balance will be off slightly. It will not be too bad, since the weight imbalance is near to the axis of rotation but it could make the car noisier, and with a slight chance of premature wear in the bearings.

my wife took her car to get mot'ed so can on assume they noticed the slight grinding whilst testing the brakes that had started only a few days before the mot, the old pads were worn right down but not enough to damage the disc (thankgod).

In regards to the broken bolt...... Nothing to grip onto as broke almost flat.
high a new hub would cost less than £25 from breakers yard easy outs cost about £2.50 apack from auto shop and you can buy stud extracters for about£8.99 i have had a simular problem and it is just cheaper to replace the hub ( a garage snapped one of mine a few year back and just used a blow torch to heat it up and a left handed drillbit to extract it . Hope this helps.
