GearStick Problem

Okay ive changed the engine in my car, the clutch and the latest is the gearbox.

But now ive changed the gearbox, the gear stick leans all the way over to the drivers seat, and wont go into reverse or 5th gear, everyother gear works, car runs smoothly and works fine, just no reverse gear or 5th. ive looked over everything and i can not see what the problem is..

anyone got any ideas.

Assuming it's a mk2, you need to adjust the selection (left/right) cable at the gearbox end. It's simple to adjust.

Did you remove this part when changing the box...?



If yes, you need to line the piece in the middle between the 2 guides. This controlls the side to side movement of the gearstick in the car

its a mk1, and no didnt touch anything like that.

Theres a golden rod that sits under the battery, This moves left to right when i move the gearstick, there is then a rectangle shape that looks like it fits in the rod and then screws on, but when i put it on properly it still leans mayb its adjusted wrong and needs moving ? but that wouldnt explain why its engaging into 5th gear or reverse. or could it be a reason ?

Did you have to remove/refit the lever arm actually on the box(13mm nut?)? It's got a flat edge to it which has to engage into a flat on the selector shaft in the box and often this shaft will drop down when released and if you aren't careful when refitting the lever, you'll tighten it above the 'flat' section with the possibility of it being in the wrong place.

Was the new 'box originally a rod-operated box? Later ones used cables and there may be a small difference between the two?
