Hi, i am new to this but have some questions.
My husband just bought a mk 2 punto its the HLX JTD year 2000 w reg.
Ok so we got it from Eb*y and it was advertised as 26k miles which is very low so we enquired about it and they said they had done an hpi and it was genuine, it was advertised as good condition inside and out, but when he got there (2 hour drive away) the n/s wing had a bad spray job on it so he manage to knock £100 off and buy it for £700 which we thought was a great bargain.
Anyway on the drive home the digital display where the clock and mileage is, is flashing.. what does this mean, it has made us think that there is something dodgy about this car as the mileage is so low and its flashing?
we have looked been on the mot website and it has the mileage recorded for each mot but the mot that was done in 2005 clocked the mileage at 1 mile!
i also tried to do a check on another website by putting the vin in and its saying that its not recognised?
does anyone no anything that may help me?

Many Thanks
Natalie

Hello and WELCOME TO THE FORUM!!

The flashing mileage means that you need a procedure called proxy alignment carried out by a fiat dealer. This has most likely been caused by someone putting a new dash pod in. When you do this, it needs to be "reconfigured" to the cars body computer, and until this is done, the mileage will flash.

I would be very surprised if the car has only done 26k. JTD's are normally motorway munchers and as such clock up lots of miles. People rarely buy them for a quick trip to the shops and back once a week. It sounds to me like someone has put a second hand dash in, and the 26k is the mileage of the car that the dash has come from. (the dash will display the old cars mileage and flash until proxy alignment is carried out.)

As for the vin not being recognised, I would try another site, maybe the official HPi one, and if its still not recognised then i would be very concerned. It may be that the car is on false plates or similar.

Did you buy from a garage or private sale?

Whats the condition of the steering wheel/ pedals like? eg any ware and tear?

HAs the service history been stamped by any garages with miliage written down?

Alan

EDIT: I should add, if its what I suspect, then fiat should be able to read the true mileage from the body computer.

And of course the other possibility is that you've found a genuinely low mileage JTD and got a good deal! (y)
