I really don't get the reason why people fit aftermarket DRLights, if your worried about not being seen then just drive with your dipped beam on, side lights hardly do bugger all. I reckon these aftermarket DRL's and Evan the ones which come from the manufactures are more dazzlings than someone with there dipped beam on. If you have your dipped beam on your back lights will come on also, but these DRL's only light up the front so isn't there a worry that someone might run into the back of you?
Pointless in my eyes
Well you've just said that sidelights are pointless in daylight, so tail lights that have the same light ouput of 5watts is also going to be pointless imo
Yes, completely pointless. You already have the choice of none/side lights/dipped headlights/main beam headlights/fog lights, surely that's enough choice to suit any conditions. Now DRLs, where will it end?
Since reading this thread I've paid more attention to the number of cars with them. I was surprised by the amount of mainly volvo/audi/vw/merc & bmws with them on in the last couple of days. Perfectly clear sunny days, perfect visibilty - pointless. As others have said, if you can't see a car in broad daylight you shouldn't be on the road.
Its got nothing to do with broad daylight, all you need is sun reflecting off of a metalic object in weather like this and you can't see much unless its also emitting a light.
Equally, enter a forest set-up from bright unlight and your eyes will not adjust that quickly, so DRL's have a benefit in these environments.
Also, over taking on long roads, car's far enough away that in the heat / brightness you can't see it (wavey lines on the road from the heat and that stuff making on-coming car), but DRL's are visble in these circumstances
Also enables me to see the pricks who don't put any lights on in fog when I'm taking a local junction across a dual carrageway. Its ok saying people should be allowed to make the decission for themself but it FACT that alot don't seem to be able to, and ultimatly I'd rather DRLs forced on everyone by being mandatory rather than having some tit T-bone me at 70 in fog because they're also speeding in it
Get used to them, all cars from 2011 will have them fitted
Yep, Feb 2011 iirc from the research I done for my uni paper.
Yes, the same government that tells us not to leave our TVs on standby because its a waste of energy and use energy-saving light bulbs that don't actually light your room properly. Now telling us to drive around in broad daylight with our lights on. Totally bonkers!
Don't know what crap bulbs your using, but my energy bulbs are more than adiquate
So how is what you've said about bonkers, sorry I don't see the connection. Ones regarding green house gasses etc, and the other public safety.
According to the link I posted above, accidents have gone up in countries that have introduced it. More pedestrians / cyclists / motorcyclists get run over.
Interestingly how much have accidents gone up in other countrys globally, including those without DRLs? A very similar number, mainly due to the increse of vehicles on the road in the world
Bet they forgot to mention that bit in that twisted truth on that website
