Dear All,

I'm not the most tech-savvy, but I am a have-a-go Henry and my latest endeavour, was to try to upgrade the radio on my 53 plate Panda. I removed the radio and wired in my new one. Then switched on the engine, only to be inundated with airbag errors and a lacking petrol gauge indicator.

Panicking, I disconnected the black wire from the back of the radio and switched the engine back on and the car was normal again, but obviously without the radio working.

I have checked the fuses and all appear correct. Have I missed something?

Any help would be gratefully welcomed and received.

Your Panda has CANbus, signals are sent along tiny data wires.

Aftermarket radio would use standard wiring, with the power 8-pin plug carrying power, switched power, earth, plus options for speed, reverse (for satnavs), lights (display dimming) and electric aerial output. CANbus must not be connected to any of these.

Correct way to do this is to add in an adaptor between the car and radio, to convert CANbus signals to analogue, and isolate the car from the radio.

Others have by-passed this. A switched feed from the 12v socket, and remove the CANbus cables from the plug.
