Hi
Hit the mother of all pot holes in the dark....
The fuel consumption has gone up, and streering seems a bit rough.
Tyre was not punchured, wheel not dented.Wheel trim was ok.
Any one else had this trouble and what damage did it do?
Cheers
Chris

Hit a mother in my Subaru Legacy, thought the wheel was going to burst out of the wheel arch... destroyed the bearing, quite a feat considering how substantial the bearings and hub are, weighed in at 2 kilos.

As I have said on other forums, put a claim in to the council Highways Department for damage to car. Take photo and details of where hole is and the depth of it, if no one claims the holes will carry on getting worse.

My 4x4 suffered after a pothole hit, which also punctured the tyre- but more my fault than the highways team as off to the side of the road...

The lower wishbone (swinging arm that supports bottom of the suspension) has a big, cross-shaped rubber bush at the rearmost end. Designed to absorb shocks that are applied horizontally, is is intentionally flexible but has a solid metal core that a bolt passes through, and a metal sleeve around the ends of the cross. Mine, the rubber and outer ring parted company and the end of the arm dropped down., nearly touching the subframe. This caused a 'rougher' ride with more road noise and effectively altered the tracking, which in turn causes tyre scrub and higher fuel consumption. Worth a check. Here's the part you are looking for:

As I could only get the part from Fiat, I had them fit it (£300ish).

There appears to be limited photographable damage. In my experience you need to buy replacement parts..then submit a claim.

Not sure additional fuel can be replaced in this way...wear to scrubbing tyres..grey area too.. :(

Hi All Thanks for the interest in this post.
About six years ago I was driving home down the A6 in my trusty 04 Punto. when bang I'd hit a pot hole. I managed to limp home and next day inspect the damage. Ball joint shot, front wheel had a dent.I wrote to the Northants county council. but nothing. I replaced the wheel and ball joint and job done..so I thought...The radiator had a split in it as well... Which bust later while driving down the A14.. Killing the engine... Pot holes I love em....

I'll add my 2 cents...

Car was an Alfa 147 (not relevant) driving on a local road I "fell" into a long thin pot hole. The tyre burst due to a bent rim - bent to the extent that the wheel fouled the suspension arm...

Long story short, I got the car repaired by a local Alfa specialist with itemised bill and "engineers report" stating impact damage. Meanwhile I'd reported the pot hole on the council website (we're East Herts) where you can actually mark it on a map and (I think) give GPS coordinates. Meanwhile I cycled out to the hole with a camera and tape measure to gather evidence, I think the most compelling photo was of my bike with the front wheel disappearing in the hole. I then "registered my interest" by email and made a claim. First time round they denied responsibility but I flatly refused that position and after some weeks of silence they coughed up. They do have insurance for this I believe.

Good luck...

The council quite often pull the "we didn't know about it" card. Check on fix my street.com. Very often they do know about it as this site notifies them if reported through it. It keeps a log of who and when reported it. Made the difference to my claim and I got full reimbursement. Happy day's.

I drive around Milton Keynes and Rushden areas.. road are a little rough at the minute esp when driving under A5 toward Bletchley MK. They have promised to spend £60 million on three county's Buck, beds, herts. which I think is a bit of a joke... There have been lots of cheap affordable methods for fixing roads for years and yet they never bother using them?
I think they just like to cause misery or own a garage.
