General White Hen Rebuild

Weeell..I can't really comment, I'd love to see it in the original white but then again mine was Ford 'levante grey' by the time I got it and none the worse for it.

Theres a bloke whos just bought a Gtie on Retro Rides. His is working at the minute but it wont last lol. Agra did my unsexy FIRE head as well. One of the reasons I want to try and fit the the Brasil unit is I wouldnt mind mechanical crabbiness if it was coupled with some performance. Despite me lavishing care on the FIRE motor it nver quite feels 100%. It always starts and runs but lacks the final revvy enthusiasm. I know a Turbo could be a right royal pain but at least I could overtake with authority. Thanks for the manual offer (y), I think I already have it. Its like an fiat dealership manual. Wouldnt mind a gander at the Turbo some time to see how stuff like the oil cooler mounts.

Il definitely bring it to the Italian day. Do you think it would be heresy to paint it rustoleum red? Very little of the white paint is orginal now anyway

speedy reply from me lol-not getting much time near the comp just now-franticly trying to get the 600 ready for the italian car day!

your y10 should be pretty nippy and rev well is the timing spot on?every fire engine car ive owned has been great

the oil cooler just mounts under the o/s headlamp with pipes running along the inner wing to the oil filter housing, something i know too much about!-coming home from work one night with some spirited driving,my oil cooler pipes had been rubbing togther(had been replaced by arnold clark before i owned it) then burst and under full pressure soaked the underneath of the car and the o/s/r tyre!,the first i knew was when i lost it and went sideways round a sharp bend- nearly wiped me and the y10 out!,i couldnt source new pipes so if you have some look after them,i had to get pirtek to fix mines-but yeh definately bring the y10!

firstcar-y10 i think i may have saw grumbleweed at the show before?,im sure i spoke to some nutter panda enthusiasts from darn-sarf!?(y)

It can run perfectly when it wants to but its not consistent. I have checked the timing. Its set to 5 degrees BTDC with vacuum disconnected . I always reckoned it was a compression issue despite the head gasket change. Its always better after having sat a few days as if oil slowly seeping into cylinders improves the compression which then gets burnt off. I remember Trevor Nicosia on his Nyssa site talking of a lurid slide after an oil cooler pipe failure, Clearly its a rite of passage :D

More cutty cutty / weldy weldy as they say on Retro Rides. Got it an MOT pass :D and 15 advisories

Probably me, been the last 2 years and first year I was the only Panda, last year neeny made it with Purple Haze so 2, but she's from up North, even from there!
Have to admit, I managed to lose it and spin a full 360 mid bend without the aid of an oil cooler in my Y10:eek: Just young & over enthusiastic. Car survived though.

Another year then. Plenty welding practice you're getting there! Anything major on the advisory list?

Its good fun welding. Id be bored if it had none to do! lol. Advisories were mostly boring stuff lke "sills painted and sealed" & brake pedal rubber worn. One odd thing was "front seats insecure" I think that something I missed a fail on by a matter of days as the new rules about front seats were about to stop being advisory. But I cant figure out what they are on about. They dont 'move' if you just try to force them backwards and forwards unless you use the pull up bar under the seat. The backs of the seats will flex back a bit I suppose if you force yourself back against them but no more than usual. I should have asked but i was overjoyed just to get a pass.

This is making me all nostalgic. I had a Y10 FIRE that I lavished care and attention on, then some old boy who had been drinking too much sherry drove into the back of it and claimed he did see it in the middle of the roundabout! I must buy another...

I'm feeling guilty now.

The Y10 turbo that donated it's heart to my first Panda was in better shape than yours.

I have a load of dirty welding to do to my current Pandas so thanks for the inspiration. We're not alone. ;)

Mines an unlikely survivor, What was your experience of life with a Turbo. Good to drive? Indifferent? Good luck with welding! Post lots of pics!

People seem to be very nostalgic about them considering all the flak they got from the press when they arrived.

Rev happy and shifted the light weight shell well enough but was lacking compared the competition (at the time Nova SRi's were king of the "B" roads). I later fitted a 1301 Uno Turbo and annoyed everyone. ;)

Plenty of photo's here...

...building the engine instead of transplanting this time. Just to make life interesting. ;)

No worries, Novas have done Iron Oxide Harikiri now. Done a bit more work. A new clutch which was 'interesting' to fit, and a new steering wheel. As one of the pics shows the old clutch was pretty gazeboed. Down to the rivets.

Great white hen:) very nice cutting and welding job on this car! I like y10, in 2011 was able to drive few times y10 from 86 with 15000km done since{9000miles from new}. Very agile little italian.

Hey

I occasionally drive through Abroath in my White Hen when I want a mooch at Steptoes. The plan for the engines is to fit one! Tired of them being paperweights.

I cant believe theres a Turbo in Abroath  Pity its not on the road I would have loved a ride in one to get the feel of what the pay off is for fitting one.

I live in london but i actually came all the way up to Abroath to pick up my Autobianchi a112!!!

Thank you very much (y) the agility of the Y10 is pretty much unmatched in the cars ive driven apart from the Panda of course.

Quite a hotbed of Italian actvity Arbroath. Did you drive it back?

i have made a couple of improvements to my Hen. Fitted an extremely rare parcel shelf obtained via a swap from Dave Henry. Ta Dave (y)

Also fitted a Head Unit. The Hen has picked up the hilariously entertaining trick of flashing its handbrake warning light in time to the music.

I hadn't passed my test at that time so my dad drove it back with me in the passenger seat!
6 hour train there... 14 hour drive back! think we must of been driving like 50mph the whole way back as the speedo was in km when i got it (changed now)
but the speedo was out by a good 25km!
